Danielle Barlow’s oracle deck is a wonderful tool for exploring and honoring Celtic traditions and symbolism. Its 45 watercolour illustrations range across thirteen moons, the wheel of the year festivals, and a wonderful collection of animal and plant allies, all inspired by Danielle’s home of Dartmoor, southern England, and ancient Celtic traditions. A small guidebook offers further interpretive notes. Perfect for daily draws, journalling, or altar or spell-work, or for deepening your connection to the land, seasons and lunar cycles.

“I have spent the last 5 years creating The Green Wheel Oracle Deck, a set of 45 cards from my paintings. This is a set of divination cards that can be used in several ways:  to offer insights into situations, to suggest new ways of looking at things, and also to help you journey deeper into an awareness of the rhythms of the land and the skies.”
– Artist Danielle Barlow

These are large cards that feel good in the hands, presented with a drawstring bag and in a lovely, sturdy, recycled keepsake box. The deck is divided into three sets: The 8 Wheel cards, which follow the wheel of the year, and mark the 8 celtic festivals – Imbolc, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Midsummer, Lammas, Autumn Equinox, Samhain and Midwinter.  The 13 Moon cards, representing the thirteen lunar months of the year, and 24 Companion cards, depicting animal and plant allies.

Printed in the UK with vegetable inks on sustainably-produced card.

This is a lovely deck, it has beautiful art, and the content and creation clearly means a lot to the artist.

The book is not thorough, nor is it meant to be, this is a deck where you are encouraged to fine your own meanings, your own associations with the plants and animals shown. I am researching the plants shown in the animal cards as a start, while for the moon cards I'm using the Ogham associations as a 'way in' given that the names used are not familiar to me.

My feeling is that this deck will reward study, both practical research and knowledge from spending time in nature, intuition and meditation.

Personally I'll be using it with the Greenwood Tarot, and they feel like relatives (given my feelings on this I was pleased to see on Facebook that the artist has used her deck with the Wildwood.)

On a practical note, the cards are large, but as there are only 45 of them I don't have a problem shuffling them like I would with a tarot deck this size. I would suggest shuffling gently though as the card is textured and not laminated.
