bookshop Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) about a decade ago i casually started to make a broadway deck and then wandered away and forgot it. a few weeks of poking around here and i've started to get a yen to return to it and see if i can at least finish off the major arcana, so i spent tonight working on new versions of the template and cards, and i figured i would share what i made so far! obviously this is just for fun and my tarot skills and photoshop skills are not the greatest. 🙂 I'm hoping to take all the major arcana from the major works of musical theatre canon, but we'll see how well i do! if any of you are musical nerds and want to suggest cards or discuss, please feel free! 🙂🙂🙂 Edited September 20, 2019 by bookshop
Emilija Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I really liked your art, particularly the first two cards. I think if you stayed with that medium you would have a great deck. Can you tell me a little bit about why you chose to use two photographs with the animation?
bookshop Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 Emilija[/member] I am focusing more on the individual characters than the shows they're from, and it's really hard to find illustrations of Bloody Mary from South Pacific and Joe from Show Boat — much less high-res images of them where they're obviously recognizable. But Juanita Hall and Paul Robeson are iconic portrayals of the characters from the films, so I figure probably they would speak to the average musical theatre nerd, or at least that there's a chance they would know them when they see them. In an ideal world I'd love to do nothing but illustrated art of every major character but i don't think that's going to be possible, there's just not enough out there outside of the show posters and film stills.
Saturn Celeste Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Bookshop you're on to something! I lived in Astoria for almost 5 years and was a bicycle messenger in Manhattan. That was a very long time ago but my love for NYC has never died. I will follow your progress with zeal!! btw, I went to the Winter Garden theater and saw The Beatles. I am just THAT old! ^-^
