EmpyreanKnight Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 When looking at your decks, do you notice a certain theme? Do you seem to like collecting Thoth-based decks, pocket-sized decks in tins, historical ones, etc? When you check a certain category in good old AT, does it seem like you have bought almost all the decks listed there? Or are your tastes quite varied and eclectic?
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 1, 2017 Author Posted November 1, 2017 As for me, I have lots of dark/scary/gothic decks. From that, I also have a lot of vampire-themed Tarot and oracles. I plan to explore blacker, more extreme decks in the future, those which would bear darker fruit, and maybe lead the way to a left-hand path. I also seem to have a lot of RWS clones and RWS-inspired decks. Which is a good thing since I plan to focus on the said system this 2018. I think these decks would lend themselves to highly interesting and informative comparative studies. I can't wait. :)
Little Fang Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 I wonder if I'm listing this right. My biggest theme is Animals. My biggest sub-theme is Cats. 8) This shouldn't come as a shock however!
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 1, 2017 Author Posted November 1, 2017 Even without a theme, stating one's sub-collection/s would be enough for me. Looking at your username and your avatar and your collection and favorite decks, I was discombobulated to learn that you're a cat person, Little Fang. No kidding? ;D And yes, I'm proud that I finally got to use that word.
DownUnderNZer Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 It is the art for me, so many colourful decks with the best imagery imaginable. Ciro M is right up there for me as well as Roxana Paul. Invested in an older OOP deck last year only as something was back to front with it not to mention the exquisite artwork put into each card as well. I also got my hands on one I was after for 2 years - the 2nd edition as I liked the borders better than the 1st edition. No regrets buying that as the artwork is incredible in that deck as well and exceeded my expectations. As of late the Astral Tarot and the two before it and a few others for their art or themes. Never read with any of the decks really, so for me it is about the art and vibrant colours. Something has to be an IT factor for me I suppose. Becoming more of a collector these days and it was never my intention .
Lantana Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 I think LGBTQ decks have to be the biggest sub-collection for me, whether they are made for us by us or a deck with a queer creator. And then of course there’s Nature decks. Animal decks, cat decks, crystal oracles, decks featuring mainly plants... You name it. :D
Page of Ghosts Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 I wish I had some cooler sub-collections but all I can come up with is that I have a lot from US Games Systems and a lot of RWS-derived decks or clones.
Onaorkal Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Since I don't have that many decks yet, I also took into account my wishlist and oracles. The biggest theme is ''no human present''. I'm incredibly difficult regarding tarot art involving humans. So I will mostly have animal and nature themed decks, or sometimes decks with humanoid creatures that don't bother me as much, like in the Joie de Vivre tarot. I have 3 cats-only tarot decks, which probably tells something about me, even though I swear I didn't do it on purpose! (I never told myself ''hoho cat themed tarot decks are nice, let's buy a bunch!)
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 4, 2017 Author Posted November 4, 2017 I have 3 cats-only tarot decks, which probably tells something about me, even though I swear I didn't do it on purpose! (I never told myself ''hoho cat themed tarot decks are nice, let's buy a bunch!) I'm looking at my cards and I see moar and moar cat Tarot decks and oracles in your future, Onaorkal

Carojulie Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Hello ! I have several sub-collections, and often decks are part of two or more sub-collections. Art decks at least 30 decks. Ok, this is potentially subjective..... but my biggest sub-collection might be decks that I got primarily for the art, and which cards could be framed one by one. It contains decks by artists who made all cards original art (examples : Fountain tarot, Earthly Souls and Spirits cards, Japaridze tarot, Stella's tarot, Wild Unknown tarot, Hardy tarot....) or decks made by artists who used another artist art as support, and turned it into tarot (example : Klimt tarot, Fantastic Menagerie tarot, Victorian Romantic tarot...) Decks featuring fantastical creatures like faes, mermaids, vampires..... 18 decks. Examples : Mermaid tarot, Mythical Creatures tarot, Monstarot, Mystic Faeries tarot, Tarot of the Sidhe, Hezicos tarot..... Dark decks 16 decks, among wich Gothic is a sub-sub-genre represented by 6 decks of my collection. Examples : Decadent Dreams tarot, Tarot de Marseille by Pole Ka, Dark Carnival tarot, Klimt tarot... Examples of Gothic decks : Bohemian Gothic tarot, Gothic tarot (Vargo), Victorian Gothic Lenormand... Animal decks 15 decks, among wich 3 decks are Cat decks. Examples : Wild Unknown, Animal Spirit cards, Animal Totem tarot, Bohemian Animals tarot, Fantastic Menagerie tarot, the Messenger cards, Animal Kin...... Examples of Cat decks : Baroque Bohemian Cats tarot, Mystical Cats tarot, Pagan Cats tarot. Witchy decks 9 decks. Examples : Druidcraft tarot, Greenwitch tarot, Jolanda tarot, Earthly Souls and Spirits cards, Motherpeace tarot.... Of course it is debatable which deck goes into which section, I am merely giving you my own way of classifying things ! Plant decks 8 decks, among wich 3 decks are Flower decks. Examples : Oracle des Arbres, Tarot of the Trees, Plant Ally cards; BirdQueen tarot.... Examples of Flower decks : Fiorigraphy tarot, Victorian Flower Oracle, Tarot des Fleurs. Tales and Stories decks 8 decks. Those are decks based on one of several stories, thus relating tarot to another part of our culture. Either the whole deck is related to one story, or each card is related to one story. Examples : Fairy Tales tarot, Harry Potter tarot, Vampire tarot by Robert Place, Alice tarot, Mythic tarot.... I particularly like this sub-genre, and I am looking for more decks of that kind, I find that very interesting ! And finally, my Luxe tarot, more than 40 decks, among wich a good chunk are Baba Studio decks. By luxe deck, I mean superior quality of design, print, cardstock, presentation.... a general impression that a deck ismanufactured with higher standard than usual, and the pleasure it gives in the hands. Examples : Wild Unknown tarot, Fountain tarot, Oriental tarot Foudraz, Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus, Il Meneghello decks, Baba Studio decks. There, this are most of the sub-genres in my collection. But, in reality, the "real" sub-collection in my collection is my Baba decks collection. I say "real", because they have their own separate big wooden box for storage, very safe and cosy, while all my other decks share cardboard boxes :) I have more than 30 Baba decks - that is, I have at least a copy of each one deck they have produced over the years, in most editions (not exactly all editions... yet), and I have backups too. I usually dislike to be attached to one "brand", I dont want to be a groupie... but really, Baba Studio have proven along the years that they know how to produce magnificent decks ! Their decks are ALL little gems, I admire and cherish them all, for the inspiration behind the decks and the art, and the technical skills of the realisation. We have to admit that everything out of their manufacture is top quality, beautiful and brilliant ! Now I could purchase any deck of theirs with closed eyes, and know that I will like it. And considering the decks listed in some of other members' profiles, I am not the only one to think along those lines ! Edted in january 2018 : I recently changed the organisation of my decks storage, they are now all gathered in a comfy chest of drawers, I tried more or less to keep "sub-collections" together in the drawers (and of course, Baba decks have their own drawer just for themselves)
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 6, 2017 Author Posted November 6, 2017 Whew that's a lot of decks, Carojulie. I didn't even know that there were so many plant Tarot/oracles. You also made me think of new sub-collection themes. Thanks!
Mab Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 I have a few loads of Pagan/ish decks: Greenwood, Wildwood, DruidCraft, Pagan 2000, Old Path, Druids, Greenwich, Silver Witchcraft, Robin Wood, Witches (Hall, Cannon Reed) Faery Wicca, Barbara Walker, Wicca Moon, Jolanda...Goddess, Northern Shadows, Norse, Sacred Sites, Pagan Otherworlds....like Carojulie, these are my own classifications. I also seem to have amassed some of the madly colourful ones: Star Maiden, Balbi , Pearls of Wisdom, Inner Child, Stone, Hoi Polloi, Albano Waite, Glastonbury, Sakki Sakki, Kitty Kahane, Langustl, Tarot of the Trees, Amber, illuminated, Prisma Visions.. I am yearning for the Hibert Psychedelic, Sweet Twilight and Bonestone and Earthflesh, but unfortunately, I have to eat.... ;)
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 26, 2017 Author Posted November 26, 2017 I forgot to include my esoteric decks, of which I seem to have a fair bit. Next year I'm looking to build up my metallic decks collection. I only have 4 so far and I'm thinking that I can push it to 9 this 2018, tho I'd have to manage this so that I can stay within the 24-deck limit I've set for myself.
victoria.star Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 I have TdMs and Baba decks as inadvertent sub collections. I really seem drawn to decks that require study... Ironwing is probably my soul deck. It is in a category by itself.
DanielJUK Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 like Lantana I am always collecting any LGBTQ decks I find as a sub collection interest. I also like RWS clones and art decks, especially bright and colourful! I have yet to delve into animal decks really, not sure why!
VGimlet Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Decks based on books Erotic Decks Science Fiction Decks Fantasy Decks Decks Based on Comics LGTB Animal & Nature-based decks Dark Decks Music Decks..... Amerigo Folchi Decks But I have to like a deck to add it to the collection.
Jewel Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 I would say that faeries and pagan decks are probably my largest sub-collections within my collection, but I also have a lot of animal based decks as well, with a nice splattering of vampire decks as well.
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 20, 2018 Author Posted January 20, 2018 . . .with a nice splattering of vampire decks as well. I like this pun ;D
Flaxen Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Going through my collection recently I’ve noticed that I have a fair few: Black and White decks Round decks Historical decks Mythical/fantastical Decks with ‘systems’ that are non-Golden Dawn Baba decks Some fit easily into more than one category. I suppose my holy grail deck is round, black and white, a sense of history/mythology and with a clear system for reading which doesn’t have to be GD based. Preferably made by Baba Studios. [emoji16]
Elin by the Sea Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 The major theme in my small but steadily increasing collection is that they are mostly quite close to RWS. I have some other decks with pagan themes and fantasy themes (Shadowscapes is one of my favorites just for the gorgeous art). I'll work with some of them periodically, but I inevitably go back to genuine RWS. I've been working with it and studying it for nearly 30 years, so I can wrap my head around the symbolism. I recently started studying the Haindl deck - the only other deck I think I might take anywhere near as seriously as the RWS (yes, it is similar to RWS, but also quite different). It is thick with symbolism, and was created by a very deeply introspective artist who understood Tarot. It "speaks" to me much like the RWS does. One thing I can say that I prefer about the Haindl deck is that it steps away from the abundant biblical and judeo-christian references from the RWS. Haindl brings in Nordic, Egyptian, Native American, and East Asian influences - I can appreciate that :) From my user profile: --[Collection]-- . 1991 RWS . RWS Edition from Koenigsfurt-Urania . Universal Waite . RWS Pocket Edition . RWS Centennial Edition . Shadowscapes (based on RWS) . Spiral Tarot (Close to RWS) . Haindl (Similar to RWS, but in a class by itself) . Morgan-Greer (Close to RWS) . Thoth . Wild Wood . Animal Totem . The Enchanted Tarot . Michelangelo Tarot . French Cartomancy Lenormand . Celtic Lenormand
truelighth Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 I have a lot of sub-collections: - Rider Waite and clones - Asian Tarots (Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan mostly) - Black&White Tarots - Polish Tarots - Russian Tarots - Il Meneghello decks - Historical decks - decks by Beth Seilonen - Cat Tarots - collage Tarots
Whisper Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 This is fascinating. I'm going to have to go through all my deck and see. I am amazed at your post Carojulie[/member]! <3 <3
Raggydoll Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I just realized that I seem to collect what can best be described as ‘educational’ decks. By that I mean decks that have a very specific theme and that will teach you about a particular subject. And I have several sub categories among these, for instance: Decks about the moon, crystals, plants, trees, goddesses, wheel of the year/sabbaths, animals and so on. And I really enjoy them, not only for educational purposes but also as divinatory tools. In fact, I really like to use these kinds of decks when I do readings with or without specific positions (a lot of the time I just lay my cards in a straight line and read them as chain of events/situations)
