Hello, Everyone. It’s been awhile since I’ve logged in here. I’m reading a lot about archetypes from a number of sources and, at the same time, learning new songs on my guitar. One of my favorites is Tom Waits ‘Shiver Me Timbers’ and this morning I started thinking that it might contain an archetype if leaving or the one who consciously leaves everything behind. Also a very beautiful song.
I First thought of the fool but the man in the song is not an innocent. He is longing for something and he does have a structured life he is yearning to leave behind, A wife and friends he trusts to break the news of his leaving to her. So which card? Maybe the four of wands as he’s leaving is filled with passion and a deep need to find himself or others like him who could relate because at home “ Nobody knows me“ Maybe I would need a spread including the death card and a third or fourth one. I’m still a beginner so this is great study material since the song is in my mind all the time right now anyways.

Hmmm... Leaving things behind particularly to "find himself" makes me think of the Hermit. Other people may have better ideas then me though...

Hmmm. Kind of 6 of Swords, but not exactly.
Trust Waits to be more multi-faceted and poetic than Tarot, lol. Brilliant guy.
Maybe this comes fairly close?

Yeah, 8 of cups sure has it pictorially, doesn’t it? Even a ‘goodbye written on the moon ....’

I have to say thanks, Katrinka. It proves I really am a newbie that I missed this Eight of Cups idea. I went back to my book from the Tarot Illuminati by Kim Huggins ( I don't have the deck, Just read that she had a poetic view of the tarot as evidenced here and bought it .I've had to refer to a lot of other sources since I gradually realized it is somewhat untraditional for a student. ) And you can probably tell I was born when the sun was in pisces too.. I will know this card better forever now.  Thanks again. Here are the first paragraphs of her description. Two different pages so you have to piece them together and to make it more complicated, i took the second page first , then decided to include the previous page so the one on the right gets read first.
