(One might argue that the cards don't give much out of themselves, and that you need to project a lot of your own thoughts and associations on it before you can read in-depth with it. But I like it that way)

It's definitely not for me, then. Rorschach-style reading doesn't give me any accuracy. My associations aren't other peoples' associations, and even reading for myself, I could simply be projecting my own fears and desires. I need card meanings.

But I can agree on the Dali. It doesn't look like Dali's work at all.

Manga style decks, Robert Place’s Vampire tarot and the Gill are all silent for me.

When you said this it clicked for me: I've never gotten much use out of manga style decks either. Technically, my first deck, from more than a decade ago, was a manga style deck and it just did not work. This is weird for me considering I draw often in an anime and manga style, but for tarot I've just never found one that actually spoke.

I will admit that I am like this with my Baba studio decks. I love the imagery and the way it feels to shuffle the cards. It’s wonderful and with their beautiful velvet bags 🥰  but I cannot read them. Maybe it’s me, but when I had the Victorian Romantic tarot I felt nothing. I blank out and no imagery came to mind. I ended up rehoming that deck. It was a pity cause I really did like it, but I couldn’t connect with it.

The same goes for the Alice Tarot. It’s a shame cause it’s my favorite story and I adore it with all my heart. I have no plans in rehoming it. And anyway, who knows, maybe in the future it might just become my new best friend.

Cora, thank you so much for bumping this thread.  It totally turned my morning from glum to happy.  I love thinking about what decks "work" or "don't work", which ones are chatty, which ones silent.  What a great topic.

Personally, the Victorian Romantic is my chattiest deck, and Robert Place's Alchemical is totally silent.  I want to love it, because alchemy just seems so interesting, but I've never really related to the symbolism, the whole arena of alchemy.  I want to, it seems like the sort of thing one OUGHT to love, but - embarrassing though this is - the pretty pictures in the Victorian Romantic give me more reading mojo, by miles.

The Alice deck is gorgeous, but I've never felt inclined to try reading with it.  Maybe I should...

Good to hear different viewpoints on the Wild Unknown.  I just bought it, and haven't yet bonded with it.  I do tend to like the Rorschach decks.  It's fun to let your intuition go wild.

Gregory, I totally agree the Mary-El is far too personal to actually read with.  Great insight!

Marirowana, thanks so much for reminding me of the Dali tarot.  I agree it's not the easiest deck, and the art is unusual, but it's just so much fun.  I wonder if I can figure out where I stashed it?  It kind of reminds of the the de la Rea.  There is a certain spirituality to both decks, maybe like the Mary-El they are too personal to be chatty with strangers?
