Although I’ve been around the Tarot scene for many years, I haven’t ventured into the realms of online forums before. But this looks like a great place to start! My interest in Tarot is focused on the history of the Rider-Waite-Smith cards and the meanings of the symbols in each image. I’m looking forward to being part of this community. Thanks - Don McLeod

Welcome Don!

I am new too. The people here are really friendly. 🙂 What made you decide to focus on the history of the RWS and the symbols?

Hi Grace and Aries Dreaming... Ages ago I was preparing to give a talk about Tarot and realised how little I knew about where it came from and how it evolved to the 'modern' Tarot of the RWS deck. I started doing more research and found it very interesting. But not everyone I spoke to about the origin of Tarot accepted the research done by the recognised historians I studied...one lady preferred to believe in the dream she had which showed Tarot being used in Atlantis...and others continued to believe the story they heard about Tarot being used in Egypt because it 'felt right'!

Welcome! I started out studying the history and symbology also, endlessly fascinating, and as you've learned, a lot embellished to make a better tale 🙂 .  The truth, commissioned and designed as a deck of playing cards isn't quite as exciting. The symbology as it has changed and not changed over 400 years continues to be of interest.

again, welcome.

Hi Don!

I have been here just under a month and really love it.  I hope you it brings you the same positive experience!

Like you, I'm currently really interested in the history of the RWS deck, especially looking deeper into Pamela Coleman Smith's biography than I've ever done.  This evening, I get to start reading Llewellyn's Complete Book of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot and excited about that.

Thanks to the welcome messages - it's appreciated and heart warming! And Llewellyn's book looks interesting - another one for the wish list <sigh!>
