EmpyreanKnight Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 It's the penultimate month of the year, and some are already making plans for next year. How about you, what are your goals, objectives, or vows regarding the Tarot for 2018? Have you already drafted a detailed program as to how you wish to conduct your Tarot studies or do you just have a general plan that you wish to implement? Or maybe you just want to wing it? ;) Do you plan to focus on collecting certain decks (like historical, esoteric, etc) or is it grab-what-you-want? Are you going to impose a limit on your purchases? Or are you -gasp!- going to execute a moratorium on deck buying? Please do share your schemes. Who knows, you might just influence someone else with your ideas. :)
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 9, 2017 Author Posted November 9, 2017 As for me, I plan to focus on studying the RWS for the entire year. I have my lovely Centennial and the Borderless, and I already have a load of books I plan to devour regarding them. To give a different, more dynamic perspective on the cards, I'm going to cross-study their images with various RWS-inspired decks like the After Tarot, the Vice Versa, the New Vision, and the Golden Universal. So that's six decks I'm going to delve in next year. :) Aside from these, I shall continue my study of the Barbara Walker. As a final deck, I also plan to explore the devastatingly gorgeous Renaissance Tarot by Brian Williams. Why have I only encountered his decks now? His art is undeniably inspired, and he has illustrated some of the loveliest images I have ever had the good fortune to chance upon. I think I shall be embarking on a classical phase soon. I'm still going to continue exploring the Thoth because it's my go-to deck, but I plan to truly study it in great depth in 2019. I think that's going to be a very exciting one too. :) I really can't include more decks as I know that I'm going to be very busy with work (among other things) next year. In any case, all the decks I mentioned should be in my hands before the end of this month. I actually have most of them now except for the New Vision and the Renaissance kits. I can't wait to get them. :)
Page of Ghosts Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 Next year I wanna get more into indie decks! Over the last year I've really started to understand what I like or don't like in a deck, and I trust my judgement more, so making a bigger investment like an indie deck doesn't seem so scary anymore. The few duds I have in my collection are decks I got when I just started out. All decks I got this year (it ended up being a few :P) are decks I at least like if I don't love them. Littleredtarot has an ok shipping price for Europe and a tempting selection, so I suspect I'll be a faithful customer. I'd also like to work some more on my intuitive skills and get to know the Thoth better as well as get into the Marseille system, which means more books for me! I love books ;D
Lantana Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 I think 2018 is mostly going to focus on using and learning the decks I have. This was a big buying year for me, and now I don’t have too many decks left on my wishlist and almost nothing on my watchlist. I think my collection feels pretty complete, and I’m ready to settle into it (and also trade off the decks that disappoint me). This might seem counterintuitive but, I’m also going to try to focus on Tarot less this year. When I look at my three practices (religious, divination, and magic) I’ve noticed that Tarot gets a LOT of my time when the other two get basically crumbs... It doesn’t feel right! So I’m trying to prioritize and streamline, and trade hours looking at blogs and forums for studying and practicing the other stuff, and hopefully in 2018 I’ll strike a good balance for the three.
DevonCarter Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 I think my plan is to stop buying (or at least limit the purchasing) and study more. I don't have a true plan, but I think I'm going to make it a goal to do a daily draw and journal about it, even if it's just a draw using an app instead of a physical deck. I also just last weekend discovered a friend of mine is also into Tarot! She had a pouch she'd made of fabric she'd woven out, and I spotted the backs of a deck of cards and excitedly said "Is that the Wild Unknown?!" It was, so I got to see that deck and a couple of others she and her husband have. So cool to find someone I already know who shares that interest!
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 12, 2017 Author Posted November 12, 2017 It seems that for next year, some plan to stop or minimize their deck-buying and focus more on the decks that they already have. A total moratorium would be a tall order for me, so instead I'm setting for myself a stern limit. A maximum of two decks per month, with non-purchases rolled over to the next month so that I may only add 24 decks at most to my collection. That pertains to decks of any kind - Tarot, oracles, Lenormands, etc. This I shall truly follow to the letter, because I don't know what to do with a hundred plus decks. I won't be able to study them all, and I must stop at some point.
Ix Chel Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 My plans are to read more the cards, instead of reading about the cards.
Trogon Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 I am hoping to be able get a few more decks next year. I'll be continuing my study of the Haindl Tarot for the 78 Weeks of Tarot study group. Beyond that, I am hopeful to find time to do more meditation work and try to get back to the point I was 8 or so years ago before I tried to be a stupidvisor.
Saturn Celeste Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 I am going to finish my tarot business website and then open for business. I’ve been doing free online readings for almost 2 years now and am ready to make a go of it. It will be a few more months of work before I officially open. I really have all the decks I have and am out of money to buy anymore at this point. I have one oracle deck on preorder for March. I’m waiting for the Astral and Thelema decks to be delivered and those will be my final tarot decks for a long time. When I’m not reading other people I study tarot books and my cards, that never ends. Also I have a ton of YouTube videos to make to promote myself and my site so I will have a really busy year ahead!
Page of Ghosts Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 I think it's a given for me that if I wanna be serious about the indie decks I won't be buying as many decks as I have this year, and I don't think it's a bad thing for me. I'll be getting less decks but spending a bit more money on each one. There are some decks by larger publishers I'm still very interested in (like the Ben-Dov Marseille deck and the Maria de Celia in a tin), they do make up the bulk of my wishlist after all, but hopefully I can spread it a bit more out and not have an almost barren 1st half of the year and go wild in the 2nd half, like I ended up doing this year :p It really wasn't planned but then it just happened that way.
Tanga Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Wow - that's a lot of cited studying. ;D 1) I... plan to get back on the TOADIES wagon. Lol - fell off when I went to the London Tarot Conference in October. I got 3 decks free - and bought 3 more. What a shocker! My deck quotient is definitely full. (which means - I'll have to see about having The Illuminati Tarot by Casey DuHamel gifted to me perhaps... hmm... it's my birthday in January). 2) I plan shortly, to book Tarot study days into my 2018 diary to finish reading a couple of the books in my rather huge pile of unread ones, as well as continue with my presently interrupted Lenormand study (excellent thread Empyrean - it reminded me that I must get on and do this now). 3) And... time to attend Tarot meetings more regularly - for the practice reading nights. (on which note I've just messaged the organiser to give me as much notice as possible for them etc.). Bring on an even more practical Tarot reading year. :-*

EmpyreanKnight Posted November 18, 2017 Author Posted November 18, 2017 Lol yup, heavy studying seems to be the recurring theme for next year. But as Ix Chel said, I should also try to supplement that with lots of actual readings too.
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 26, 2017 Author Posted November 26, 2017 Just to add: I plan to include more metallic decks in my collection next year. I just hope that the peso appreciates against the dollar, this year has been punishing. :)
Queen of Nothing Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Next year, I'm planning on being more consitent with studying. I did well for a few weeks, but too often I let ljfe get in the way and the time I spend reading with my decks is far too sporadic. I don't really plan on buying less, per se, but I do need to be careful and spread out my choices instead of impulse buying them all at the same time.
Little Fang Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 I think I want to focus more on my Oracle decks. I do have quite a few tarot decks that are collecting dust too since I've taken to only focusing on one of them for the last few months. Tarot dry spell! I also want to revamp my website and my offerings, since nobody pays it any mind and I'm feeling it's not quite up to it's potential yet. I suppose I'm still finding my voice, and I'd like to put a lot more work into getting my business actually going.
EmpyreanKnight Posted December 6, 2017 Author Posted December 6, 2017 So yeah, I figured that when it comes to the Tarot I currently have all that I really wanted. I did the math and since February this year I've been buying a deck a week, sometimes more. Looking at my collection, I have quite an embarrassment of riches, so I decided that I must spend more time with them instead of lusting after other decks. And really, I've already bought so many of my holy grail decks - the ones that I've always dreamt of and pined for - that if I stop now I'd still have so much in my hands. So for my final revision of my Tarot plans for next year: I'm imposing upon myself a total moratorium on deck-buying until my birthday next year, in September. To this, I shall faithfully comply.
Raggydoll Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 My plans are to work more with my marseille decks, to keep working with every full moon and new moon (I do specifically designed spreads to be more aware of every moon cycle) and to keep doing what I already do. I like to study and read books and I also journal quite a bit, but I feel it is just as important to actually use and touch my cards regularly - otherwise it's just theory and that will not stimulate my intuition! It's been really fun to read about everyone else's plans. When it comes to buying vs saving money.. well, I always try to limit myself, but I will stay realistic. I love vintage decks and whenever a desirable one that's reasonably priced comes my way - I'll buy it!
Audelia Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Great thread :)! I've enjoyed reading everyone's answers. My 2018 tarot resolutions are to stop my deck hopping ways and spend the year focusing on a select one or two. I also want to deepen my study a little with some reading and I hope to do more face-to-face readings.
Bookworm Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 My plan is to keep on with the 78 Weeks project, which so far is a great way for me to actually think about what a card means, and to participate in the ISG circle. That's probably enough to keep me out of trouble.
faerybraids Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 I'm just hoping to keep up my tarot studies in the new year. I've been pretty bad at reading consistently this year, so any decent continuation of readings will be great for me. It'd be pretty cool if I could get my own deck started, too, though I'm not holding out hope that I'll be done more than a few cards by the end of the year if I do decide to make it--it'd be more of a therapeutic process than anything.
Guest Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 I am hoping to have all of my minor cards done in the next year... I have had that goal a few years so this year I am intending to do a different minor card every ten days during the decan it represents, with the ten card done within the thirty days it is in. try and keep myself on a schedule

Do you use the Golden Dawn decanates? When do you plan to study the Aces?
Ephemeridae Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 My tarot plans for 2018 are part of a broader plan to organize a more structured and deliberate spiritual study, which will involve a lot of list making and thought organizing. I plan to have a detailed outline by the end of the year, as if I were going to use it to write a book.
Guest Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 decan by triplicity. no idea what to do. Something surreal most likely...so i can pretend I draw crooked on purpose.
