Hi everyone,

Despite being deeply interested in the Tarot for the best part of three decades, I've never before ventured into the world of those who feel as I do ... so signing up here is a big step for me.

My name is Seren, I'm Welsh and I'm a graphic designer by profession.  Covid has decimated my business, but it has also given me the time to work on something I've thought about for years, and that is creating my own Tarot deck. At the time of this introduction I have 35 cards finished, so just under halfway there.  I'm not the world's greatest illustrator. I have had lots of failed attempts, but I finally realised my limitations in terms of how I 'draw' images. Graphic design is a very different discipline to illustration and it took me a while to determine a style for my cards.  But once I began to play to my strengths (slightly cartoonish, but that's how I draw) then the cards came.  Sometimes it takes me three or four days to produce a card. Sometimes a couple of hours.  I've long given up trying to create them in sequence.  I now just randomly pick a card a day and slowly but surely I'm getting there!

What I realised is there are so many exquisitely illustrated decks by both digital and traditional artists, but the intricacy of the design is very often lost on a small card.  I own several decks - some of which I just like looking at as beautiful artistic creations. But I don't use them.  My 'go to' deck is always the Rider-Waite. It's clear, it's straightforward, and let's be honest, the illustrations are basic and simple yet iconic. They epitomise everything the Tarot is about.  Once I realised that I don't need to produce miniature works of art for each card, but rather just create them in the way that comes naturally to me, then the whole process became much easier.

I'm what you would call a 'sceptic' about most things, but the Tarot has shown me, time and time again, that it is infallible. It provides me with comfort and guidance, providing new perspectives in so many areas of my life.

I don't have a psychic bone in my body.  I'm not intuitive, remotely 'woo'  or easily influenced.  I just know that the Tarot works for me.

Looking forward to making friends on here and joining in with the discussions.

Welcome, Seren! Fellow no-woo-just-Tarot type here. Haven't quite gotten a handle on how many of us are on this forum.  :78496:

Thank you to everyone who has replied to my introductory message.

I'm delighted to meet you all and I didn't know about the Deck Creation Forum (how exciting!) so will definitely be heading over there.

The card I'm currently working on is the two of cups and I hope to have it finished by the end of the day, so I better get back to it!

Thanks again to you all.

Hi @Seren

I really enjoyed reading your introduction and I'm looking forward to your posts and following your work on your deck.  I am an occultist but quite truthfully like to balance a whole lot of practicality in with my woo.  It makes my tarot work better for me  🙂

I've just been looking through the 'Deck Creations' forum and feel rather overwhelmed and intimidated to be honest!  There are some very talented people posting on this forum.

My designs are far more traditional and simple.  My deck doesn't have an angle as such - it's just images, mostly based on the Rider Waite in terms of content, but done in my own style.  it's no good pretending I'm a great artist/illustrator because I'm not.  But I am a very good graphic designer.

I'm going to post a couple of cards and see what you think. But please don't expect great works of art or you will be disappointed!
