Hi everyone just a quick one how do you keep your cards? In a silk cloth, or wooden box or a material pouch, what’s best please?

Posted

Some of them are in the original packaging, some are in bags, a few are in tins, some are just bound together with a hair elastic.
Nothing is "best" - the silk idea was stolen from the I Ching, there's no need for it. Use whatever you like.

I don't have many decks yet but mine are in the original box or tin. My friend introduced me to tarot in tins and I love it! It's so much easier to carry around and the box doesnt get damaged. I havent got any in a bag but often wonder if they'll get damaged if they're free to move in the bag..?

Lol, all options are fine!

For those I regularly use I put them in cloth pouches (and for some of them I even make them myself!)

Sometimes we can read: don't put your deck in a metal box! But honestly I don't see why, it must be a superstition unless there is something there I ignore (always possible).

If it comes in a nice box, and many of the newer or indie decks do, then I leave them in. Else in bags. I try to make them myself too, I sew, crochet or knit. I don’t mind wonky 😉

Not if the bag fits well.
If the bag is too loose, you can drop the deck in it box and all. Just use your judgement. 😉

Is that what they're saying now? LOL. I've had decks in tins for years. They're fine.

Most of my decks are in their original packaging... but I do own some decks who had these big massive space wasting boxes... So I knitted bags for those. Since they are custom made for each deck, they fit perfectly.

I do keep spare jute and velvet cloth bags around/handy, incase I'm feeling lazy to knit a bag.

I have all of mine in the box they came in.  The novelty deck I started with didn't come with a box, but it did come with a free pouch, so that's the only exception.  The rest, I just keep in their boxes along with their guidebooks.

My first deck, back in Middle school, I threw out the original box and the LWB and put it in a nice wooden box. I regret it every time I handle the deck. Its so much more of a bother to deal with. I actually contacted the company and they sent me a new LWB recently, but I'm still stuck with the box. Its occurring to me as I type this that I bet I could have asked for a new box, but it feels like a lot to ask them to send me a second package.

So like many people have already said, original boxes. My oldest original boxes (15-20 years or so) are very much falling apart because tuck boxes aren't great and since I had fewer decks each deck was used more frequently, but I just keep 'em in there and handle them understanding that the contents will fall out if I'm not careful. 😅

I try to sew custom bags for each of my decks; I've done about half. The materials vary from cotton to synthetics, and I even used knobby red pleather on one. I don't really follow any of the "must be natural fibers" beliefs, myself, though I can respect those who do.

The decks I haven't gotten around to making bags for, I just keep stored in their boxes. I have two or three commercial bags that came free with orders, and sometimes I use those. I'm ashamed to say my old Thoth deck is currently sitting in a gaudy red fake-velvet bag that I got free somewhere. I'm looking for the perfect material for it...still.

I'm also getting into making custom boxes. I already dabble in book arts outside my Tarot practice, and some of my friends/colleagues do amazing things with chipboard, paper, and imagination.

I wish I could knit! I never got the hang of it, but I love knitted bags.

I typically store them in their original boxes, lined like books on a shelf.  The ones without boxes have rubber bands.  Some are in bags but that usually means they are "remnants" of a deck that I did something stupid too or they are otherwise fragile.   The only exception is a handcrafted Major Arcana only ritual deck made for me by a mentor magus decades ago as a gift.  THAT has a silk-lined special box because of the significance and irreplaceability.

The decks that I currently use for content creation and personal readings sit side by side in their boxes on my desk.  Except when I pick one up and carry it to another room but leave behind so hours later, I return to the kitchen, or bathroom or laundry and see the deck just sitting there loose and feel like Worst Tarot Mom Ever.  Again.

… you can tell by this behavior that I don't have cats.  And also why I have deck remnant bags.

Leather is good too, if you're OK with using it. Soft suede is nice, but I'm talking about thick, sturdy leather
I have a couple of Lenormands in old leather playing card cases. I just leave them in the two purses I carry most. They get banged around all over the place, but everything still looks new.

I might swap one of the Lenormands out for a Kipper. I have a mini Lenormand in my wallet anyway. No need to carry both a mini and a full size.

Old playing card stuff is great for mini Tarots (if it's roomy enough to accommodate the extra thickness), Lenormand, Kipper, Italian Sibilla, etc. and you can find well-made things cheap. Purchasing a leather case for a full sized Tarot is usually another story - it's more expensive since there isn't much of a secondhand market, and the better quality, fitted ones tend to be over-decorated, usually with all that stuff they think we're supposed to like (that a lot of us don't. 🤣)

I'm with her. Except for the elastic. She's not as old as I am - but I have a few that WERE in hair elastics and the stuff perished and left marks. Regular elastic is even worse.

Most of mine are in their original packaging; those that had none (or whose packaging fell apart) are in dollar stores bags - I have a few fancier bags, but my decks are for using not worshipping...

It's these. I have tons of them from when my hair was really long and I kept it plaited:

After about ten years, even if they're just wrapped around cards, the elastic dies and they get really loose, but they don't hurt the deck. The covering prevents that.

But I agree, some elastic is really bad. I've found old rubber bands that were literally turning to goo. Luckily, they weren't on cards or anything else important.
It's weird, some just dry out but others get gooey.

I also use some tobacco bags for the smaller decks or pocket versions.

Mine are mostly in their original boxes, which are also bagged and labelled. I've got millions of bags, mostly cheap ones from eBay, but a few posh ones.

For the ones that come in those huge boxes including the books, I bought some blank smaller boxes and put the books in my bookcase.

At the moment, they all live in desk drawers and a chest of drawers (and now a chest)  but I am considering getting them all out and storing them on shelves like the books, as I'd rather like to see them all out. Easier to find, too. I hope the light won't fade the box edges?

And I wish I could sew!!! (I don't know past tense of sew. Is sow correct?)

I have a sewing machine at home, can't even make head and tail of it to get started... but totally intend to learn this year!

dollar stores bags

What are dollar store bags? I've never heard this one before, hence curious... google wasn't too helpful.

Sorry. Dirt cheap faux satin bags from a dollar store in Canada. (And I just went to look for them and they seem NOT TO STOCK THEM ANY MORE   Luckily I have a good few in reserve...)

Much like these but satin rather than organza, and not gold; just floral, with ordinary silky ties.

Some of these are satin:

The ones being sold as Tarot bags are three for $8.97

But you can get 30 of these slightly smaller bags for $12.99 - I guess the key to a good price is not to call them "Tarot bags", lol.

Velvet bags that would fit a mini Tarot, Lenormand or similar.

I am waiting for two decks to arrive and I am looking for tin boxes to put them in. I do have a box for now and I have put some dried sage, lavender and a crystal in it.

I keep mine in their original boxes, but then I keep those in- I think- 7.5x8.5x storage boxes made of something like paperboard. Those boxes I decorate, sort of. My first was just spray-painted white, and then I lined the inside with an old pair of pj pants I was super fond of (they ripped, and I couldn't use them anymore lmao). My first two decks are in there, plus some books and misc. other things. The second I painted black, just covered it in glitter, and I lined the inside with this really soft purple fabric. That one has my Adventurer's deck, and a set of oracle dice, and it's going to have another deck in it once it arrives.

The only things is that none of the boxes are visible and are hidden in hard to reach places, which is a bit sad since I put a lot of work into making them 😔

I mostly keep my cards in their original boxes, but a few (mostly mini decks) I keep in pouches that I got as free gifts when I bought the decks.  If I'm working with a specific deck, then I'll keep it in a pouch for the duration, just for ease of use.

I have over 100 decks and i store them all in a wooden trunk that i keep in my spare bedroom,
