I wondered what other peoples' experience has been with online or mobile tarot apps...you know, the ones that randomly generate the cards? Personally, I have a hard time with them. I have had good experiences, but overall, I find myself really disconnected from them, and the cards usually don't feel right. I'll get out my physical deck and have a completely different read and experience. Even if it is something I don't want to hear, it feels right.

I don't even like to buy decks online. I want to see them, touch them, hold them. I'm sort of the same way about buying cookware, which is a really oddly specific thing, but nevertheless. Is this just a "me" preference, or have others had similar experiences?

A lot of us prefer a physical deck because that's what we're used to, I guess. But an app can work just as well if you get a good one.
My main issue with apps is that I don't like a lot of the spreads, and a lot of the ones I DO like are missing. Generally, I can get a line of three, but not a line of five or seven. I can get a card of the day but not a 3x3.. Etc. I wish that was customizable.

The upside of apps is that you can try out a pricey deck cheap or free, and it's much easier than lugging around a purse full of decks.

I found one that does have a custom spread option. The Labyrinthos app (got mine on Google play store...not sure about apple, but probably there too), has a custom tab. You can add as many cards as you like and position them how you like.

Ok...in my effort to look into the custom spreads in this app, I have found a lot of spreads already programmed. Perhaps I judged it too quickly 🤔 whatever...I still like to hold the cards!!! Lol 😉

I've been meaning to ask the very same question @Helena I also like the labyrinthos app, its convenient and has custom spreads which can add. I've added so many. As you said even I don't like to get these digital readings but why I use this use sometimes is I can have a digital storage of all the readings. If you save your readings in it, they give out an awesome analysis in the 'Mirror' tab. For example, if you;ve had many Knights in the recent reading, what does it denote or majority of cups in your readings lately, what do they signify. I love that feature to sort of have an overview and extra edge.

So, what I do is I use the app but I change the setting to 'physical reading'. So while the app is shuffling I get my tarot cards and actually pull out the cards, and then you can feed the same card into the positions mentioned in the app. So you get the physical reading feel and still you can go ahead and record it in the app and save it. Mostly, do it to see a trend over some past weeks in the Mirror tab. love it!

So combining the best of both is great ❤️

I like the Fool’s Dog app, android and iOS, you can buy a specific deck ore use the free version which gives you a reading with a mix of decks, but free is always great to try and see. The full versions which are around £4 have usually the complete guidebook. They come with a few standard spread layouts, often deck specific and free form, plus option to journal as well as enter custom readings I.e. to recreate a reading you drew with real cards, maybe for journaling purposes? No idea. Anyway.

I prefer physical cards, but I like it e.g. when I have a few minutes at work or a quiet and boring lunch I can practise drawing a couple of cards or a few and practise making stories, things like that.

plus: Shadowscapes on larger tablet screen is amazing with all the detail!

Well, it's a step in the right direction, anyway. Those card images, though...not for me.
What I'd really like to see is something like Orphalese, but for phones. Load the decks and spreads you want, with no unnecessary stuff like meanings, if you don't need that. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

The Bohemian Gothic is absolutely STUNNING backlit on a screen. That one's my favorite.
