Curiosity Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 I use this (very) old scarf that I don't wear anymore but I still find it very pretty. I like the idea of giving a new purpose to it and I like how it looks on the table 😅IDK, I feel like making the table look beautiful makes me feel good and maybe I read better cause I feel good about it.Â

Loving that magenta & yellow/gold

FallenAngel Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 Thanks for this thread. I was looking for another tarot cloth, but remembered that I have some scarves which used to belong to my grandmother, so it would feel much more special to me to use one or some of those 🙂
Raggydoll Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 I have used all sorts of things… handwoven mini carpets, placemats, table cloths, handkerchiefs, scrap fabric etc.. I particularly like vintage stuff and heirlooms for this. Woods also works good, I’ve bought slabs of wood or even rustic chopping boards to use for readings. (If you can’t tell, I love natural materials. ‘Wiccan’ and pentacles aren’t my thing.)  Though obviously not for everyone, I also sometimes use sheepskin. It’s very good when reading outdoors during winter. Since I live in the northern parts of Scandinavia, we typically have lots of snow and sheepskin can go directly on the snow to create a reading table plus it will protect the cards.Â

Would also be great for instagram I admit! Do you have a special cloth/s on which you lay/spread your cards? Where did you get it from/How did you make it? I'd love to see pics of your spread cloths for inspiration! Hi. I use two alter cloths one for baseit Readings and the blue one for angel readings.
nord_drache Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I thought I might share . . . I have 2 cloths I read on. Both are silk scarves I bought for my Mom as a teenager years ago. Mom was from Saxony, so she almost always wore a scarf of some kind. After her passing I inherited them back and eventually they became the surface I read on. The more favourite of the two I keep my personal deck wrapped in, and the other is the one that get regular usage. I find that the patterns, colours and texture actually grounds me as I read - probably the emotional / spiritual connection I have with Mom. I will admit that on occasion I will be too emotional to read since I still miss her so much. If I can remember I will share a picture.
Marina Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I have tree cloths. Two of them are made of blue "starry" fabrics, Â but one is darker and matte (and was made by my mother so it's extra special), while the other has glittery stars and is in a lighter shade of blue. Another is a black cloth hand-painted by my grandmother, with a golden zodiac wheel around a pentagram and some other symbols. It's very precious to me as well, but because it's rather small I end up not using it as often. Also, due to the painting on the fabric I am afraid of rubbing the cards too hard against it and runing it, lol! Â I also have a narrow Andean tablecloth in light colours that I also use as a reading cloth, specially when reading with my Playing Card Oracles, which uses vertical layouts a lot.
Guest Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 I don't have a tarot cloth, should I be getting one? I only use my kitchen table.

I don’t think it’s necessary. As long as you have a clean, dry surface, you’ll be fine. I often read at the table to but when I don’t, I have used all sorts of things to protect my cards. I’ve even read outside in the snow, and then I’ve used sheepskin as a cloth. I’m sure you’ll be able to find something around your house to use if you plan on taking your cards outside.Â

DanielJUK Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 I think reading cloths have 2 reasons for being used and of course are optional and based on your preferences.  Some people use one because of spiritual beliefs about the deck. This is an old idea about protecting the deck from negative energies by wrapping in silk, so you wrap your decks in silk and read on a silk cloth to spiritually protect it. There is a part of this as well about it being a ritual and some people may not think it needs protection but it's treating the deck with respect when being used.  The second reason is to physically protect the deck, from dust, a messy table and it's about keeping your deck nice.  I do have reading cloths but I don't really have superstitions about it. I like to read on a cloth, really more as a physical thing. I have dealt cards on surfaces with no cloths, it's no big deal. It also looks cuter if you take a picture of the cards for someone you are reading for 🙂

gregory Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Well, if I just had a glass of something, or a piece of cake - you just never know... ! You always find out the table is sticky AFTER something stuck, you knowÂ
FLizarraga Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 I have bought and received as gifts some beautiful cloths, but in the end I never use them for reading because they get too distracting. Â I do love, however, to wrap decks in them, so they are DEFINITELY in use.
