Thank you for the heads up! I've been waiting for this for a very long time and I'm excited to get one of my own.

Just ordered the 2nd edition, I have the first but havn't liked using it too much since it was irreplacable.

Now I can go crazy with the second edition once it arrives and lock the first away.

Mine is on the way, I've been watching for the update seemingly forever.

Mine too. I ordered straight away because I've waited long enough and didn't want them to sell out again. I didn't get the 1st edition for dragging my feet.

Arrived today, lovely and all present and accounted for. The tribute/memorial cards are nice too.

The box was bumped in one corner and both those corners are stretched(?) so the white paper shows. disappointing considering it was 20 pounds to ship and the deck was expensive to begin with. On the other hand the world is full of bigger things to fuss about. Lovely deck, I'm glad to have it.

Can anybody with both first and second editions compare the images and cardstock? I have two of the first edition, and was wondering if I should give into the second.

My 2nd edition arrived yesterday, and I’m so happy! I am fortunate enough to have a copy of the first edition, but I always felt hesitant using it because it was so expensive. This edition feels more usable as far as the card stock, too. I took some pictures to try to show some of the differences!

Overall the 2nd edition is darker and a little bit sharper. It still feels moody and atmospheric, but it’s easier to see details. (In all my pics, the 1st edition is on the left, 2nd edition on the right).

The 2nd edition is slightly thicker cardstock—I think I saw somewhere that it’s 350 gsm vs 300 in the original. And the gilding is coppery rather than gold.

The new cards are just slightly less bendy. For me and my small hands, it means they’re very difficult to riffle shuffle. I was able to riffle shuffle the 1st edition, but I only did it rarely, so I feel okay about just overhand shuffling these. Here’s the whole deck in my hand, then half the deck with a bit of bend in it.

Here are a few side by side comparisons to show the difference in colors. There are a few cards where I like the color of the original better, but overall I think I favor the 2nd edition. I think the change really works overall.

The Emperor actually loses a little detail.

The suit of Cups was originally quite green. Now some of the overall green has been taken out. This actually improves some cards, like the 7 of Cups, because the green areas really pop. The 6 of Cups doesn’t look quite as good, in my opinion.

The suit of staves is wonderfully vibrant!

Another big difference is the finish on the cards. The 1st edition had a very slight gloss, not excessive, but it made it somewhat difficult to view them in artificial light. I really like the new matte finish of the 2nd edition. It’s velvety and clear, and the cards are easy to look at from any angle and under any lighting conditions. I turned on an artificial light for this picture and you can see the big glare on the 1st edition. It makes more of a difference for me than I thought, and I really am happy to have this be my main deck.

Thanks for reading, I hope this was helpful for someone! I am really grateful that Neil’s brother took this project on and has made this beautiful deck available to more people. It is such a treasure.

an excellent comparative overview, well done!

@Tanaquil, thank you so much for your comparison. The Tyldwick has always intrigued me! It is off the table for me due to expense; I don’t want it badly enough, but I love seeing the deck. It is so beautiful and I am very glad that more people get to love it and cherish it. ❤️

@Tanaquil

That was a wonderful comparison.  My copy of the 2nd edition got here last week I was only able to admire them and then put them away until later in this month.  I think I definitely prefer the darker colors of this edition even though both are lovely.  Its really an extraordinary deck and I've been consuming a lot of oatmeal and potatoes since I impulsively spent a week's grocery money to get it while the getting was good 🙂

I like oatmeal and potatoes though.  LOL

Maybe a study group is in order?

@Tanaquil   Thanks for the comparison! Love seeing the deck and do like the artwork, though I'm not feeling the urge to get it for some reason. 🙂  A friend who lives in the Netherlands got hers but the box was so banged up she couldn't even open it to get to the cards. The deck came in a bubble mailer without any extra padding and had been bashed like crazy.

(Seeing the photos, I find it a little weird that some people (not here) were insisting that there were absolutely no changes done to the cards whatsoever.)

Thanks, all! @fire cat pickles, I saw you started posting in the study group—I think it would be great to revive it! There are so many details and sometimes I don’t know their significance, so it’s wonderful to see other people’s interpretations.
