I don't think bitch SHOULD be censored. It CAN be used for abuse, but also refers harmlessly to a female dog... Also PLEASE make sure porn isn't censored - there are SO many words with that string in.. AND - that it doesn't run through spaces. There's a forum where you can't type "The pen is mightier than the sword." That's just silly.

Agree. And an ass is a donkey and occurs in words like "assorted" and "pass".

Nuts are on trees and in brownies and...well, you get the picture. Best not to go overboard, IMHO.

The way that our filter works means that there is no issue where words are running through spaces, and I don't think that is going to change. I agree that it would be a very awkward thing and it would take a while to figure out what you did wrong. One forum I was on (many years ago) had a filter that prohibited all mentioning of pharmaceuticals. This was a forum for people with chronic illness, so you can imagine that it caused issues. People often do want to share their experiences with certain treatments and that meant that everyone had to write in codes, which made it look real suspicious 😆

Regarding "the pen is mightier than a sword" - censoring "penis" is silly, considering it's a word used to refer to the thing in the field of medicine.

There really is no need to go overboard here. Really, who is going to use the word penis out of of context? We are all responsible adults. Wed o not need to be micromanaged. I don't fully understand why we can't say the word s**t to be honest. People say say "s**t happens"  all the time. Are we capable of talking like we have some sense? Big whammies---f word, derogatory words, inflammatory ones, yes, but casual ones that are sometimes use in the occasional turn of the phrase?

I am sorry to say that there are some VERY immature people on that forum, as in silly teenage boys - but yes, even so. I actually wanted a dragon lineage based on that speech - and I shall have to call one "The Pen", to achieve that... it kicks in mostly for NAMES.

 

In the UK some years ago the government, in its drive to protect fragile young things (OK there is a need, I do know that) blocked links to all sorts of porn sites. The result was that students - and even people like me working in public health, IIRC - couldn't get to sites like Breast Cancer Support and Rape Crisis.

But the ultimate irony - when they set up a website for sexual advice for young people, they sent those of us working in public health who needed to have links to that kind of thing - they called it - god, I forget what, but they sent out the link in an email to people like me. LUCKILY I had a senior director standing behind me when I clicked the link in the email. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE ?" he said. In the normal run of things we'd get blocked from the internet for "accessing" the slew of  sites that shot across my screens, but in the circumstances, the IT guys cleaned my machine remotely and I did have a reliable witness. I emailed the government site to say maybe you need a name change.

The reference to "the pen is mightier than the sword" was not about this forum, but another forum that Gregory is on. We have not censored that word or many of the other words that people here have expressed a concern/dislike of not being able to use. I ask that we don't get sidetracked here into talk about "going too far" when that has not happened and is not about to happen! 🙂

 

To summon this thread up, Gregory wanted to know if we could substitute the **** symbols so that something else is shown when a member uses one of the few words that are blocked in our censor filter. So far ,the words that people have been mentioning that they feel would be wrong to block are actually words that we allow here! What we have blocked are offensive words that have been used by porn spammers and trolls. That is why this was put in place to begin with.  

 

I hope that clear things up! 

 

And I think its good that we allow some time for Little Fang to actually reply to these questions/requests.

This is true; sorry for any derailment. It's just that the kipz image I suggested in the first post

is from that same forum. Where there are some very silly people who make quite a lot of censoring more necessary than it would ever be here.
