Could also try to make it look like it's trying to say something with it's mouth shut, but I'm not sure how it should be depicted.

Probably because it could be considered not safe for some workplaces. But I agree that it's become 99% socially acceptable and most people do it.

I don't see how it constitutes an occupational hazard. I can see some people trying to prevent their children from encountering words (which their children are probably very familiar with).

I'm 76. And many forums run into trouble if they allow seriously bad language. There are a few youngsters on here - and there's no need to fall foul of COPPA. I swear like a trooper - but I try not to do so in front of people I don't know. The internet is very short on tone, and we could easily cause huge offence.

The censor filter helps prevent porn spammers and internet trolls from posting offensive material. There have been specific incidents that made this necessary.

Not a literal, physical hazard. "Not safe" as in "NSFW" - they have a "no profanity" policy, and if the wrong person sees it, they can throw you under the proverbial bus.

If I saw my post and just saw someone giving a big thumbs down stuck in the middle of it I would have a negative emotional reaction to that. I'm in the camp of preferring to not be censored but I understand that there are extreme circumstances. If the censoring is really for the purpose of those circumstances and not just to tell regular forum users that we've been naughty, then I'd hope whatever is put there makes it completely clear what's happening and is hopefully on the lighter side. I see a lot of angry faces in the suggestions, which feels kind of harsh for when you maybe are going to be annoyed at being censored in the first place.

I'm on a forum with an automatic censor image. What is here is the same but with **** instead. I HATE that !

**** cunt and I'm out of possibly defined as obscene words I recall. "Bitch" went through the filter in another thread earlier today.

 

On that note, Steam Community censors words with hearts rather than with * - and it's rather cute.

And yeah - several of Carlin's Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV get through, IIRC, but some of the milder ones don't.

Are you sure it's a technical issue and not the definition of our filter? I was merely trying to have at least one word censored out to see how it looks like.

Little Fang has manually typed in words to create the filter to begin with, and I am fairly sure she´d want to add those words as well, so that is why I pinged her 🙂

Thank you @katrinka for helping us with words for the list 😁 I decided to hide your post so that just staff can see it. That way we can reference it but other members don't have to choke on their morning coffee 😂

 

If anyone else has the urge to test the spam filter or accidentally sees a word that likely should be blocked, then instead of posting your findings here, PM me and let me know (but do tell me in the subject line what it is for, so I don't think you are sending me dirty messages  )
