thorhammer Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 if...hypothetically, you understand...a certain Thothie who has been out of the loop for years but who was intrigued by M.M.Meleen's decks ever had the funds to buy one of them, which would you recommend? Please discuss pros, cons, fronts, backs, size, stock, companion material etc. Fool's Dog apps are out, I'm afraid. I have one and it leaves me so cold and unfulfilled when I try to use it.
NerdyShelties Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Personally I LOVE Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus. Disclosure - I'm not a Thothie so be aware of that point of view. Benebell Wen reviews it here and will probably offer a more expert analysis than I can give. I'll give it a try though! The artwork is beautiful, colorful and clear. The cards are just slightly larger than average cards, which I enjoy because my old eyes can see the art easily. The card stock is good quality, tough enough that I can imagine it will age well but still actual card stock, not those super glossed coasters you get sometimes. I love the border, it's a warm white, a creamy linen, which I feel complements the cards, and really frames the art. There is plenty to interpret in cards, and you can spend quite a bit of time with dignities and correspondences, but it's also very accessible. I can use these cards daily as well as in depth study. The book you can purchase is excellent, again very accessible for a beginner but I've heard people more thothie than I love it as well. This deck has made me want to learn Thoth. There is a podcast by MMM, Fortune's Wheelhouse, if that is of interest to you. It might be helpful to listen to the creator talk about Thoth and RWS as you decide on your purchase.
devilkitty Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 As much as I like the Rosetta (both original and papyrus versions), Tabula Mundi is in a whole other league and easily makes my "desert island" list. That said, you'd need to decide which version attracts you. The Nox et Lux has a certain austerity to it, while Colores Arcus is awash with a very thoughtful use of color. You will not go wrong with either, it is down to personal preference. (I use either as the mood strikes me.) I have written this before and I stand by it: I think that this is a pack that will be spoken of reverently fifty years from now. Book M, which was written to accompany the Tabula Mundi, is also excellent and makes a nice side-by-side read with Uncle Al's Book of Thoth.

Rose Lalonde Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Another for Tabula Mundi! Where cards share astrological signs, she's shown it in the art, and it's been a huge help to me. Here's an image that's a perfect example of that: 9 of Wands (It's also available with the complete Book M (which I recommend as highly as the deck) on Fool's Dogs apps. -- Actually the Rosetta is too, if you have access to those apps and want to compare before spending more.) Cardstock is similar in the two I have - TM Colores Arcus and Rosetta Gold. Nice card stock. Durable. If I could only grab one deck from a burning building... TM is it.
Rose Lalonde Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Btw, for anyone who's a fan of MM's and didn't see already, she's doing podcasts about esoteric symbols in the majors - Thoth and RWS - with Susie Chang called Fortune's Wheelhouse. It's free (but if enough people sign up to give a little on patreon, they'll be able to do the minors as well, which would be a huge undertaking).
thorhammer Posted July 7, 2017 Author Posted July 7, 2017 Thanks, everyone. I suspected the TM (the coloured version, I think) would be the result, and this seems to have confirmed it for me. As I said above, Fools Dog apps are a no go for me. I shall begin saving for the Tabula Mundi.
Rose Lalonde Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Sorry, thorhammer, I completely missed that about Fool's Dog. But I hope you enjoy the deck.
Trogon Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 OOoooooo! Another deck on my wish list! Well, two actually! Both the Colores Arcus and the Nox et Lux are fabulous! I really like the directness of black and white decks, but most of the time want all that color. Having the two versions would be fun I think!
Moonmystic Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 I have to add another recommendation for Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus! It's an absolute gift to the world of Tarot.
victoria.star Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 Mine arrived in the mail today :o It literally JUMPED out of the packaging...seriously...had to pick it up, wipe off the sand, and contemplate its energy without any plastic or paper in between. Now that I write this, I realize how that has never happened before... I am hedging about what to study next, as I have several decks coming and been away from the cards for a bit, but the TM is vibrating as I speak. There I something special there thorhammer. I got the regular version, the half priced book and the extra cards, fyi.

If you want to work through your deck collection a bit, you might consider the Deck of the Week which is now here on TT&M. It's been a good way to help me work with several of my decks (both new and one's I've had for a while).
Bodhiseed Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 I tried to like and work with the Thoth, but never got excited about it. Then I got the Rosetta, and it changed completely how I felt about Thothy decks. But as others have already said, the Tabula Mundi is in a class by itself. I'm an odd duck though, as I prefer the black and white version. If you can, get a book too.
Alta Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 I have enjoyed working with the TM Colores Arcus, almost the only deck that I have worked with since I got it. The book is excellent. I prefer the coloured version though have the black and white as well.
DownUnderNZer Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 I have the TM and Babalon LE plus Book M and they are safely locked away with a number of others. Rosetta (original) too. At some point I will bring it out to try my hand at Thoth, but finding the time is the question. I only like some of the artwork not quite everything...yet. Maybe as time goes by my appreciation will grow more and more and especially when I understand the symbolism and background etc. With the Decan cards I think my star sign is one of the best designs out of all 12. Love it! No regrets spending the $$$ as when it stops selling it will be hard pressed to get and especially the Babalon as only 156 or thereabouts exist never to be made again. Collectors item.
EmpyreanKnight Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 I love the Thoth but I have never gotten around to purchasing her decks. One day, I shall have both the Colores Arcus + Decan Cards and the Rosetta, and their corresponding companion books. Mark my words. :)
