When you get a new deck do you do anything special with it?  Do you have a ritual to connect to the cards or do you feel they work fine straight out of the box?
Many years ago I used to sleep with my new ones under my pillow for at least a week. At 1 time I even anointed my cards with my signature sent oil as well.  I’ve gotten lazy these days so now it’s just a quick thumb through to check out the pretty imagery then some brisk thwacks on the table to shake off any unwanted energy and it’s off to the races..

So what’s your thing when the postman drops that crisp new baby on your doorstep? Do you think that if I did a bit more with my cards in advance that I’d get better readings? I’d like to know your thought on this subject.

I think use is the thing that makes a deck read better 🙂 Practice makes perfect.

I do like to keep a trusty or especially cherished tarot deck by my bedside! Sometimes a deck will arrive to me and be an instant favorite.

I like the idea of a special scent or a prolonged introductory period. But it’s not something I am likely to do. Much more about connecting with the cards through readings.

Daily draws was a big practice for me years ago and I brought it back recently. Can’t deny it’s a great way to get to know a deck.

I use to do an interview spread and cleanse it. Nowadays all I do is rub a bit of essential oil in the box to get the newish smell of the deck off.

When I get a new deck I go through each card. In the process I'm holding every card in turn, and I think of this as imbuing them with my energy. Sometimes, if I feel like doing something extra in the way of cleansing, I'll knock on the deck thrice or I'll ring my bell over it to cleanse using sound (my preferred method). For bonding with the deck, I really think reading with it is the best way. I'll ask the deck personal questions, like what kinds of readings it prefers, how it describes itself, whether it is willing to read for others, and the nature of our collaboration. There's an instagram challenge called the July Deck Bond Challenge and the first few questions in that challenge are the ones I like to ask a new deck.
