Fool's Dog cured me of my desire for a Frankendeck

I got the Fool's Dog tarot sampler app, and tried one of its readings that drew on a bunch of different decks. It was .... weird. I do sometimes read with multiple decks, but with thought-out positions and complementary themes... this was just random and hard to read. Maybe a deliberately put-together one would be better, but I suspect that there'd still be some disconnect.

Previously I'd been thinking of putting together a frankendeck because I so often find that I dislike particular cards. So... maybe not.

I don't  want to diss Fool's Dog, though - the sampler is a nice way to test the idea of a digital deck. I bought their digital Gaian based on it. It's not perfect - the journal seems a bit glitchy - but I do like having a deck at my fingertips (and discreetly). (and: I'll probably buy the physical deck based on the app, actually).

I thought this was going to be about that Alleyman thing. 🤣

I must be living under a rock - do tell!

It's exactly the idea of one of our member here on the forum, who created the Patchwork Tarot deck.

From the Fool's Dog tarot app I put on my phone the Housewives Tarot deck app (not really an esoteric one!), it's just for fun, LOL

Below is my today's card 😁

I love my Patchwork, Frankendeck, and Rogue tarot, but only when I'm traveling for my card of the day. Lots of variety without packing lots of decks.

The disconnection in a reading though is why I don't buy decks by groups of artists.

I had never even heard of this app (I'm totally behind the times in most things involving the words phone + app) so I just downloaded it too and tried the "Daily card" feature.  Wow.  It pulled up 6 versions of the 10 of Cups/Water for me,  Touching each one led to it flipping and giving me descriptive text from the accompanying deck LWB with the option to see the whole page.  Then there was a journal feature for keeping notes.

I'm not sure I'd want to use this app to "read" with, but for comparative studies and having something to do away from both my computer and paper library?  I love it!

I love my Patchwork Deck, it has a few cards from many different decks. But Sharyn is totally right about it's the disconnect between the styles which is tricky in a reading.

The Patchwork Deck is very naughty because it enabled me to go and buy the full decks of the decks I really loved in the sample cards 🤣. It does read well though.

But there is a problem with collaboration decks and ones with different artists. If there isn't a unified look or style, it's really hard to read from.

I am sure Fool's Dog is just enabling people to buy the full decks on their app 😆

@gregory I will never forget that ghastly deck and the mess making it for all the contributors 😬. I am not sure I would buy a charity collaboration deck again.

It ended up having the artwork in such a small part of the card 😂. I am glad you managed to improve it with trimming.

I love the Housewives! I have the physical deck and it's so cool.  It also gives excellent, spot on readings - truth delivered with sharp wit. It's not nearly as lightweight as it seems.

I like 'patchwork' better than Franken lol. If selected with care, I could see it working.

I've just bought my second digital deck ... it's not much more than a cup of coffee.

I have many patchwork decks and also collaboratives. There;s only one that has a problem - and it's not because of being collaborative; it's to do with the GHASTLY artist info they put on the cards.

EEEW. I trimmed it. IT looks WAY better now.

I'd encourage ANYBODY with that one to celebrate Bastille Day with an office guillotine!

I have two - one trimmed (I think I bought the second off you.) It was a good cause and was started by someone I rather like. But they should have stuck to their original plan in SOME form at least. There are some very nice cards in there, lost among the design.

Did mine with scissors. It's not the deck as such; it's the way they put it together when they failed to raise enough cash to do it the way it was first advertised. If they'd said at the time "would all backers please chip in another 10 bucks" it might have worked better.

Hi everyone!  This is Sara Mastros, the new Managing Partner at The Fool's Dog.  Our Sampler deck is primarily intended as a way to explore all the decks we publish.  I agree, it is harder to read than a normal deck (which is excellent for non-beginner readers who want to stretch themselves).  In our new free all-in-one Tarot library, individual decks are in-app purchases (instead of each deck being its own app) will drop July 13th.  I hope you all try it out!  Because of the new format, one feautre we're looking to implement soon would be the ability to assemble your own frankendeck from all the decks you own.  We'd love to get your thoughts on that, or any other features you'd like to see us implement!
