The Sexual Key To The Tarot by Theodore Laurence

I was surprised to find this thin tome in a local bookshop, and since Tarot books are very rare here, I swooped on it like a perplexed vulture. In all honesty, I thought that it would feature subtle discourses on the creative male and female energies that suffuse each card, the ways they interact (pro)creatively or destructively, the hidden and conspicuous sexual symbolism and imagery that is reflected in each card, esoteric perorations on the erotic compatibility between the Courts based on their astrological attributions, etc. I expected it to be somewhat like DuQuette's seminal videos on the Sexual Alchemy of the Thoth Tarot which are very frank, yes, but still subtle.

 

I just thumbed through it last night and oh, how wrong I was. My Catholic, slightly prudish heart was shook, I tell you, and as I read through some cards I found myself picking up my jaw from the floor again and again. It was very graphic and detailed, but I can't throw it away because I felt that while it was unabashedly brazen and risqué, it was not obscene at all, nor was it prurient. The brief discussions on the minors read more like a catalogue of sexual ideas, situations, practices, fetishes, obsessions, temperaments, and proclivities. Especially in the more voluminous discussions of the majors, its tone was matter-of-fact rather than sensational, tho it certainly didn't leave me bored at all. I actually learned a lot of interesting things from the book, and not just in the oh-so-that-really-is-a-thing-now? vein.

 

So, who else has this book? Do you ever use it? How? Why (just kidding)? I'm at a loss as to how I can practically apply the info in the book, tho I think they may be very useful in certain readings. It is definitely for keeps tho.

Auguries: Many sexual enemies or competitors; advantage over these; the indomitable phallus is victorious over all others; success for the sexually aggressive; superior sexuality challenged; love-fights; success in sexual jousts; mastery over attacking phalli; sexual prowess.

 

Inverted: Sexual embarrassments; perplexing sexual demands; also, hesitancy in copulation will bring about great loss; anxiety; distress; impotence; also, a caution against erotic indecision.

 

 

SIX OF WANDS

 

Auguries: Promising news of great orgasms; victorious coitus; triumphant climaxes; copulation crowned with its own desire; the crown of sexual mastery; sexual gratification follows patient waiting; sexual supremacy.

 

Inverted: Apprehensive sensuality; fear, as of a victorious penis at the entrance to a lover's vagina; vague fears cloud optimistic coition; treacherous lover; vagina opened to the enemy; disloyalty; phallus (penis or clitoris) erecting for competitors; also, jealousy may lead to discord between rival phalli.

Yes I am aware that 7 of wands is very competitive with sex. Almost disturbed with competition. I unfortunately knew a guy who was like this sexually as I drew this card for him (not for me). He would talk about how his girl had an affair with him and dumped her bf for him. That they were elevated on the balcony ‘doing it’ whilst the ex was trying to climb up. Then the dude brags to us all about it like we should be jealous. He competed with his friends ‘my girl looks hotter check her out.’ Yes, this card is competitive but doesn’t have to be. It’s in the nature of the person.

But it is truly wonderful and one of the funniest "tarot" books I have ever read. I cannot take it seriously. I'm not 100% sure one was ever meant to.

Hmmm I must admit, I learned a few things I never thought was possible before. I mean, they say that there is nothing new under the sun, but some of the things there are just plain ridiculous lol.

 

And yup, some of what the dude wrote there are funny, alright. I was chuckling and laughing out loud at some parts. "Loss of faith in genitally-produced happiness" (2oWRx), "babbling and slander connected to one's sexual technique" (7oSRx), "terror of unknown phalli" and "unforeseen orgasms" (8oSRx). All the time I was like whuuuuuutt?!?

 

But seriously, some of the sexual keys (i.e. meanings) that he listed for the symbolic images in the majors do make sense to me. I've incorporated a few of them in my repertoire of possible card interpretations. The minors tho - the sheer creativity of the author is mind-boggling to say the least. ;D

I've never performed a sex reading before altho I might do that with friends in the spirit of fun. It's just that the Tarot is unpredictable, and when people expect fun and silly readings, it may decide to turn the tables on us and churn out cards that reflect the cold, harsh truths about the querent's sexual life. But yeah, I'd definitely try that one time. :)

Oh I wouldn't dare do a sex reading for anyone other than me. I think sex is too much of a sensitive topic for ppl even if they ask for it, unless it's on this forum. But id never do it for a friend. I would only use it for my own knowledge of other ppl so I can understand them and what drives them better. Or sometimes for my own entertainment. But if im trying to understand a person better and it happens to include how they are sexually, yes ill do a sex tarot. That sounds a bit confusing but yes, the way a person is with sex says a LOT about a person.

I got the book the other day.  I actually love it!  The messages for the Majors are great.  The minors are the ones with 'auguries' and 'inverted'. I had aspirations to be a writer but decided to go into tarot instead but I still belong to some writer sites.  One of them is an erotic writers site and I used to do weekly erotic readings on Sunday at the website.  I haven't done them in a long time because I found this site but I will do a reading using the book this Sunday.  It will be fun!
