Starlight Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 I asked about the outcome of a potential course of action should I run with it, and got the Wheel of Fortune. I don't use reversals, but the first thing that drew my eye when I turned over the card was the snake on the left-hand side. I did a bit of research, discovered that the snake represents a Greek god Typhon (a sort of monster-deity) and something about salt and destruction and spirit becoming material. It all went a bit over my head, tbh. Interesting, but not easy to apply to the question. The WoF is not all bad, and can mean that a difficult situation improves, but in this particular case I'm wondering if the snake that caught my eye suggests that the situation would actually get worse? This is the way I'm leaning, giving that the snake is heading in a downwards direction. Any thoughts or insights greatly appreciated. :)
Raggydoll Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 You are right that this snake is traditionally thought of as Set or Typhon. I remember reading that it symbolizes death or "evil", while the jackal on the other side is representing Hermanubis and symbolizes "good" and life. The most important thing about this picture, I think, is to see the direction where these two creatures are heading - it sure looks like "the good" is on its way up (or at least striving up) and the evil is being cast down. So I would interpret it as if things will turn for the better. But it is important to remember that since this is a wheel, nothing ever stays the same. So it is not a depiction of the good conquering the evil for all eternity, it just hints to what might be coming up in the near future. The bit you read about salt and spirit is a reference to the alchemical symbols on the wheel. They are symbols for the alchemical transformation process.
Flaxen Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 The Wheel of Fortune is also connected with Chesed and Netzach on the Tree of Life. Chesed is associated with Jupiter and Netzach with Venus. In traditional astrology these planets were known as the 'greater beneficent' and the 'lesser beneficent'. This is why it's usually seen as a positive, 'turn for the better' card. Your action may well mean things improve, at least for a while. :)
TheFeeLion Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 Intuition is a powerful thing. Personally, I would listen to that first. The way I see the Wheel is that it is constantly turning, you might rise to the top on one turn only to fall to the bottom on the next turning. It's the way of life. It reminds me of Death in a way; something needs to end in order to make room for something new. So in this particular reading I believe your intuition is pointing you in the right direction. The snake is going towards to lowest arc of the Wheel so things may get worse before they get better. If you're still unsure you could always ask a clarifying question or try this yes/no spread thing ( I've found it pretty handy :) ) Maybe you could ask if this is the right direction for you to go? It could be that while things might get worse on the downward turn, once you're at the bottom of the wheel the only way to go is up...

Thank you Raggydoll. :) So the card is more positive than negative, but reiterates that nothing stays the same. Constant change. I didn't think about the snake moving downwards which could be seen as a very positive outcome. That's something I must remember. And thank you for explaining a bit more about the alchemical symbols and transformation. :)

I've always seen the Wheel as neither good nor bad, just about things moving around. So comfortable can lead to less comfortable and back again. That the WoF is as seen as more positive is very reassuring. :)

I think a clarifying yes/no spread is a great idea! I've learned a bit more about the WoF from Raggydoll and Flaxen, and they are pieces of information that I will keep in mind for future readings. In this case, perhaps going with my intuition and doing a yes/no spread might help shine some clarity and perspective on the question. Thank you!
