Decan Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) How do you cut your deck guys? What I do: I shuffle my deck, then I cut it by using my left hand. I consider the card at the bottom of my 1st pack, then I return the 2nd pack and consider the card at the bottom of this 2nd pack. Is it the way you do that? I saw that some people don't look at the card at the bottom of the 2nd pack, but the card at the top of the 2nd pack (which is the card that is just after the one at the bottom of the 1st pack). Of course we can cut and just consider 1 card, the one at the bottom of the 1st pack, but when you want 2 cards, what is the "right" way to do that? For my daily recently I cut to have 2 cards. Thanks! Edited October 30, 2021 by Decan
Raggydoll Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 I don't cut my deck... I just overhand shuffle and then either pull from the top of the deck, or fan out the cards and pull individual cards 'randomly' where it feels intuitively right. The latter method is the one i typically use when I do small readings, like 1-2 cards.

Yes, to cut is an option, and I could always choose randomly 2 cards after I fanned them out on the table (what I do generally).
katrinka Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 I only read cuts when my intention is to do that rather than laying the cards out. But I always cut the deck, since sometimes I can see some of the cards while riffling and I don't want to have any idea what cards I'm getting until they're laid out. I shuffle and cut the deck into three piles. I cut from right to left with my left hand, mainly because it's an old habit that I picked up somewhere at a more impressionable age. If I am going to read cuts, I flip the piles over and read, no named positions, and I'm done. If not, I pick up the middle pile and put it on top of the right hand pile, pick those up and put them on top of the left hand pile, and lay out the cards. I suppose it would be OK to read cuts and then use a layout, I just don't see any benefit in doing so. To me, it smacks of doing two spreads on the same question.
Decan Posted October 30, 2021 Author Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) Very interesting, I didn't know this method @TheThumbPuppy I should try! When I randomize my cards I shuffle and cut (in 2 packs, at times in 3 like you and Katrinka do) but generally I don't read the cut; cutting is just part of the process of randomization most of the time. Or I want to cut only to read the cut like @katrinka. I guess I could cut in 3 packs to have 3 piles and then 3 cards, but when I want to read a cut I just need 2, no position, and I read the combo. Anyway, I note that both of you consider the card at the bottom of the pile for each! Thanks! Edited October 30, 2021 by Decan

The only difference is I use my right hand. Why do I do it this way? I have no idea.

Same here, and the "theory" on hands that I remember, is that the left hand is closer to the heart. But also if one is right-handed, cutting w an awkward left hand would probably help to randomize even more! I have no idea about that really... but I'm sticking w my left hand here cuz cutting decks is about its only useful function 😅

katrinka Posted November 6, 2021 Posted November 6, 2021 I think it's an actual tradition. People wear wedding rings on their left hands because it was once believed that there's a vein running straight from the ring finger to the heart. The left hand has been thought to have a direct connection to the heart for a long time. It's also considered the "sinister" hand. There is food for thought here. 😁
Newpath Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 I don’t even cut unless I am reading for someone else in which case I ask them to choose a pile. When reading for myself I shuffle while asking the question and stating the position the next card is going to be in. I then wait for a card to fall out of the deck and use that one. I only generally do three card spreads at the moment.
