Hi, I am very new to tarot and am using it as a tool for self reflection.

When I draw cards like the 5 of pentacles or the 4 of wands I feel like there is lot to see in the card - all sorts of emotions and stories that I can use and relate to.

But I come unstuck when I draw an ace. I feel like there's not much going on on the card so it's difficult to connect with them. If I look up the traditional meanings they seem quite straightforward but don't often resonate with how I'm feeling. Has anyone got any tips for how to get more out of my reading of the aces?

Good question - I often have/had the opposite problem: I feel overwhelmed by an Ace.

But I can see why you'd feel the opposite. The "base" reading for an Ace always seems to point to "new" which can be maddeningly vague. I've overcame my feelings of being overwhelmed by not focusing as much on the "concrete" aspects of the card but the energy - the suggestion. Instead of thinking , "You'll have a new beginning in ____", I started framing it as "Your emotions will lead you to a new path," or "The excitement you feel will show a new focus" and then try to apply that to the surrounding cards.

Viewing the Aces as a springboard/motivator rather than something tangible. As an energy vs. something concrete. A mood instead of picture.

Make sense? Hope it helps. 🙂

@and_it_spoke thanks, that's a really helpful way to think about it. And linking it to another card makes a lot of sense, perhaps I need a two card draw if I pick an ace first.

Also, an good way to read an Ace is its placement in the spread. Whether before or after other cards. Or even above and below. Over in the individual readings sections I did one for myself for the last full moon. At the bottom of a column I had the Ace of Cups. It just happened to be placed there when I laid the cards out. Part of how I read it for myself was understanding how all of the above feelings/happenings will flow down into the cup and in its alchemic functions will turn all that flow of water to wine so as though I keep my attention straight on what the spread showed me.

I'm being a bit vague overall, but thats a way of reading Ace's.

@Eric13 I love that idea. I haven't experimented much with multiple cards but I like that idea of having a few cards and creating a narrative across them. I've also only put them in a line so far so I will experiment with moving their positions around to find a story I can tell. Thanks!
