What is this old worn deck?

Hi all,

I became a member today to hopefully find an answer.

I came across a very old, worn deck. It is like nothing I have ever seen before. It does not contain the standard: cups, queens, wands, swords and it has inscriptions in 4 different languages.

I did google some of the inscriptions and it appears to be in Hungarian, German, Latin and one other language I could not make out.

The cards are very literal.

ie. they spell out "thief, jealously, death, pensive, father...."

When you have enough posts, please post images, so that we can see. (Or you can take pix and upload them to a hosting site like imgur, and post links.)

But you would do better to post in this thread: many of us find decks we can't identify !

Those titles are from Bohemian fortunetelling cards (too often referred to as "gypsy" cards, something many of the Roma object to.)
There are a lot of versions of them. They're very popular in Eastern Europe:

@katrinka,

I read older posts and you are sort of correct.  This deck is 32 cards, the back of the card does not have the "gypsy" logo, however it did lead me in the right direction. I found them online.

@katrinka,

attached is the link I found on the first edition of these cards.

These cards belonged to a friends great grandmother.... apparently the second edition was 1910, and I want to say hers are first edition?

The colors are not very bright- almost look like pencil.

The backs of different versions and different editions would obviously not all be the same. There are a lot of variations in the thread I linked to.
The ones you encountered are still being published as Biedermeier Aufschlagkarten.

Great - well done, katrinka - so now you know, Newbyonhere.

Although this thread started out in the introductions area, I have moved it over to Cartomancy as it's about finding this deck. I've also amended the title for easier recognition of the thread theme.

@Newbyonhere Katrinka is helping you work out what deck it is, both people helping you in this thread are real experts in the field of decks. They are both helping you, no need to question their responses. We can only go with what you tell us and how you describe the deck. I am glad you have worked out what deck it is now 🙂
