Hi all,

With a new year fast approaching I'm wondering how many of you calculate your year card and, if so, what year will 2018 be for you?

I calculate my card on every birthday and for 2018 I'll be staring down The Hanged Man. This is a card I've always had a little difficulty with so I guess I'll be learning his lessons first hand. I'm hoping this year brings a lot of new insights and a deeper connection to my own integrity.

If you don't know how to calculate your year card it's quite simple. Here's the method I use. You add up your day and month of birth to the year you want to calculate your card for.

For example: 4 + 12 + 2018 = 2034 = 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 (if you get a double digit here, reduce it until it falls within the major arcana).

So what's in store for you? :)

I count my year cards as starting on my birthday in September so for the first 8 months of 2018 I'll keep on with Death and when September comes it's The Hierophant who takes over. He's also my birth card so I wonder what he has in store! I had the Hanged man from my b-day in 2016 to this September and I spent a lot of time in limbo, as well as realising some heavy stuff I had compartmentalized. It was an interesting, but not very eventful year for me.

So mine is 2/7/2018. That adds up to 20-- Judgement. I don't know what to make of this. There are so many things that could be.

I've got The Hanged Man for my 2018 year card as well. I had a bit of a visceral reaction to calculating it the other day, but thinking on it now it might simply be a carrying on of what I'm feeling is starting within me right now (and the dread I feel towards upcoming events...). A lot of contemplating, a lot of observing without participating, a lot of justifying my decisions to myself and others. A lot of paying for those decisions and being judged on my viewpoints. So basically my usual brain on overdrive combined with more judgey-stuff than usual.

I've never really gone by year cards before, so this is interesting to me. I've always wondered whether to apply it at the start of the year or at my birthday and just never quite decided which I felt was more accurate. Thinking on the past year I wonder if the cards overlap in a way because of how certain events before my birthday played out--going on that it means The Hanged Man will move in to influence Strength at the start of the year, and Strength's influence will fade out after my birthday...

I also have Hanged Man for this year which a real bummer seeing as I’m trying to go back to school this year. I’ve gotten the Hanged Man a lot over the past few years telling me to accept my lot in life (disabled, practically housebound, unable to work) and I’m honestly sick of it, so having it show up this year of all years makes me worry I’m going to go to college and wash out in a week or something. :/ I can hope it’s not that, right? That it’s some other lesson about meditating or whatever? Maybe the fact I’ve gotten it so many times means I actually don’t understand it’s message yet.

My 2018 card is the Lovers. I'm looking forward to discover this new year  :D

About the Hanged man, it was my card of year 2015. It was indeed a difficult year but a really really important one. It was when i began to discover  some aspects of myself and to accept who I really am. It was also the year when I finally started to live my life instead of dreaming it :)

Sure this is not a card about joyful or relaxing things but it has been about growing for me.

It is still Strength (or maybe Justice ;) ) until my birthday in September, upon which it will turn into the Hanged Man. So many Hanged Men here.

I just draw a card on my birthday, which also happens to be very close to the end of the calendar year, for my year card.

This year is Temperance :)

My year card for next year is the Chariot. So I'm potentially looking at a year of drive to meet goals, being pulled in different directions and the need to harness my energy to the direction I want to travel in. The Chariot in RWS carries within it the symbolism of the previous cards so there is also a feeling of coming to the end of one particular cycle.

Sounds exhausting... ;D

So, even though you use your birthdate, does the prediction start at the beginning of the year or does it start from the birthday and go till the next birthday.

I did mine for October 2017 and got the death card. For the year after that I got the temperance.

I wonder what it’s like when you get the tower. That card makes me feel really uncomfortable. It’s my most dreaded card.

Oh, and I had the hanged man last year. I quite practically hung myself out to dry. It was like I had no other option than to give in to others who abused their power and were terrible leaders.

I actually had the Tower as a year card once (not calculated but in a year ahead spread) and it was a year of radical change for me personally. The Tower isn’t all disaster and fear, sometimes it’s willingly tearing things down that are holding you back.

I calculate mine from my Oct. birthday each year.  This year till Oct. 2018, it's the Moon.  I like to read and compare the different interpretations from decks and look at them as a whole picture for that coming year.  Then on New Year's Eve I'll draw a card for the coming calendar year as a secondary theme.

Looks like mine is card 7, the Chariot. I am pretty happy about that! :D I could do with some movement and victory! One of the lessons of this card though - I find - is learning to harness my own energy properly.

However, one thing I do know for sure about Chariot is it lets *nothing* stop it. So, yay! :D Too often, I let the wishes of others prevent me from accomplishing my own goals, in deference to my loved ones getting what they want. I hope the Chariot theme of 2018 prevents this! I need to occasionally put my own needs first.

I remember my chariot year and it was pretty good.

Thanks for sharing Page of Ghosts. From what I've managed to find online, a lot of people say that a Hanged Man year is quite uneventful and a lot of the work is done subconsciously.

The Hierophant is definitely interesting. I always see a little rebellion in that card - going it your own way :) I hope it's a great year for you.

Nice to see a fellow hanger :D I totally get that vibe. I definitely feel this is a continuation for me of some stuff that was stirred up over the past two years. I'm anticipating a lot of contemplating and trying to get the balance right between healthy self-examination and anxiety-inducing examination. Wishing you a great year! I hope we both come out of it swinging.

I always apply it on my birthday. I don't know why, it just feels more fitting to me that way. I do think the cards can overlap, what I'm particularly interested in is the shadow card of your year card i.e. Hanged Man = card 12, 1+2=3 (Shadow = card 3, Empress). I often wonder if the shadow card gives us advice that will help us learn the lessons of the main card. For example, if we embody the self-compassion and nurturing energy of The Empress, do we give ourselves the space needed to shift old attitudes and see things from a different perspective? It's interesting :) or maybe I'm just overthinking :D

I would say that if it keeps appearing for you, then maybe there is some message there. To me, the Hanged Man is all about sacrificing things that no longer work for you, attitudes, bad habits, toxic relationships etc. and being willing to see everything from a different perspective. Maybe the Hanged Man is asking you to keep an open mind about going back to school and to accept everything as it comes?

Wishing you a very positive year, full of growth. Hopefully that Hanged Man will leave you alone after 2018 :)

The Lovers should definitely be interesting! My fiance is going into a Lovers year as well and I'm interested to see how it plays out :)

Thanks for sharing your experience of the Hanged Man. I love that you found acceptance with it, I'm hoping it can teach me a little about that too. Big love to you on your Lovers year! :)

I know! It's odd. We should start a club :D

I go from birthday to birthday :). Temperance is a lovely card to get - a year full of healing and balance.

I'm going to say something now and you're probably not going to believe me, but my Tower year was one of the best years of my life. It sounds really weird to say that, but it's true. the Tower came in like a bulldozer and got rid of EVERYTHING in my life that wasn't working and it left me feeling free. In the space of a year I finally worked up the courage to leave an awful job, awful friendships, a toxic relationship - it was like completely wiping the slate clean. I hope that you find peace with that card. It can be scary, especially if the changes come out of the blue, but ultimately know that the Tower takes away the shaky foundations so you can rebuild stronger.

I do mine a little differently in method, I think because of using numerology quite a lot, I'm used to adding all the digits together, so I do the 2+0+1+8 as well as birthdates and add every individual number and then round it down to the first major arcana number.

In 2016 I had The Tower (16), at the end of that birth year, I had a real Tower event in my life with my Mum having an accident.

in 2017 I had the Star (17) and most of this year has been helping her recovery (she is almost 100% now but it took 6 weeks before she could walk again) and healing in my own life.

From May in 2018 I will have the Moon (18).

If I use Daniel's method, I shall have Judgement until the end of August of next year, after which I shall have The World. Using this method, the cards for my previous years fit better. I'm a bit hesitant to use it since it means I'd have to go through the Tower again in 2022.

Using the method in the OP, I got the Moon. ARRROOOOOOOOO.  ::)

I need to watch my step, though.
