I dearly home this is in the right place?   Could someone explain, what the idea of all the various packs are please?  Cat Tarot, crow tarot, and all the mountain of other packs. Are the symbols the same, with the same meaning, or are they just a fun thing (sorry not meaning to offend with that, just asking?)  The older packs seem to have different symbols too, just wondering, looking learning.

Thanks all.  Rick.

There are what you might call three main groups of decks. The tarot of Marseilles ones have unillustrated pip cards, the Waite-Smith ones are fully illustrated, and then there are the ones based around Crowley's Thoth deck. As a fourth lot there are those based on he Golden Dawn. Crowley based decks have their own system and meanings. Marseilles decks readers sometimes use Waite-like meanings, and sometimes go much more for their own meanings, which you can find n a number of threads here. Most of the decks you mention are based on the Waite-Smith system. Many creators add their own spin, which makes for arguments and confusion. In your place I would use Waite meanings like those on Aeclectic, to start with

and develop your own take on them as you go. Don't let it freak you out!

Another site I like to use for a quick meaning reference is Labyrinthos:

I often combine this with aeclectic when the deck didn't come with an LWB or chest sheet, or I don't feel the imagery is self-explanatory. The variety of keywords can often help for those decks which are off the beaten path.

For starting out I would stick with one site or book. And I find Aeclectic considerably superior to labyrinthos, myself. YMMV and all that!

Thank you both, not that I fully understand, but I'm sure it will come with the steep learning curve I've started. Very grateful for your time guys, I know its worth.  That page you send is perfect for the beginner in me, know the cards is vital I'm sure.

Kind wishes.  Rick.

In my opinion, the basic idea is simply to appeal to a wide variety of people.

The symbolism is not always the same, which is why its recommended to start with a RWS deck because there are a lot of resources for it and its good standard deck.

Different decks can give readings skewed in various ways depending on the creators intent - for example, very positive readings from certain styles of decks.

Personally, the standard RWS deck doesn't appeal to me so I go for decks with artwork I prefer because that means I actually use my cards!
