Tarot Deck Personality Types

Merry Christmas everyone,

For my 18th Christmas this year ive gotten the Essential Tarot by Mary Hanson-Roberts. As I was shuffling the deck I heard a gentle, kind, elderly but masculine voice in my head saying "I'm Chris I'm looking forward to work with you." I was pretty shocked to hear this I stopped shuffling and just looked at the artwork of the cards.

Afterwards I went onto the internet to look up Tarot deck personalities. So I then asked Chris a few questions about his physical appearence as a deck. I've gotten these two cards that feature and elderly man in his 70s with weathered skin, short grey but wavy hair with a gentle and kind personality. So for now on I just refer to the deck as Chris; just from this experience i was wondering has anyone else experienced this? Given a name to their deck? Or actually know anything about this?

I haven't had that specific of a personality come forth with any of my decks. Although, many of my decks have some personality traits that tend to come out in readings. For example; the World Spirit Tarot that I'm working with as my DotW is very patient and willing to answer my daily questions with meaningful input and in seemingly fairly gentle terms (like, "yes, this is still an issue for you and here's something to help you deal with it today"). On the other hand, my Deviant Moon Tarot seems to be pretty blunt and even sarcastic at times. The Röhrig Tarot likes to take me fairly deep into the topic of the reading, bringing up issues from the past for the querent and how they're affecting them today and how to work through them.

Then again, the voices I hear and images I see are usually brought to me by my Spirit Guides and I recognize them as such. It could very well be that Chris is one of your Spirit Guides, or an ancestor spirit who is helping you and choosing to communicate via your Tarot work. If that is the case, it might be because you are most open to hearing him when you are working with that deck.

Yeah that's what I've thought as well that I could have just channeled through a passing spirit. But you have brought up a good point I'll try and look into soon TY for the insite.

Yes, my favorite decks all have different personalities and that I how I choose which deck to use for each reading. By 'personalities' Im referring to their different attitudes and conversation styles, and the way they reply to me. Some decks are very blunt (on the verge of being rude), while some are more tactful and so on. I am usually drawn to decks that have a sense of humor, even if it's a bit sarcastic at times  8)

None of my decks have names.  Except the ones already given them.

Nor do I really hear voices.

But their artwork style does lend a kind of "personality" to them.

And - I choose "who" to work with according to my mood of the day.

e.g. -

I have a number of ritual decks - set aside just for ritual work.

Barbar G Walker for instance - is my "Kick Ass" spellwork deck. No nonsense - straight to the heart of things. Chop chop!  :D

You may see why.

Tarot of the Cat People - is for when I'm in a more floaty, esoteric, dreamy mood, and want to

focus on meditation and healing work...

When I'm annoyed or challenged and feel like I need a self de-bugging- I use Barbieri Tarot.

The fantastic imagery full of fiery dragon creatures and fantastical beasts - speaks to that

wild side of myself - and is quite useful in my self-examination:

Etc. etc. etc.

I don't give my decks names, but they do have personalities if that's what you'd call it. Like my Thoth is a straight-shooting, solicitous, but hermetic scholar who only entertains important and specific personal questions and who shuns other readings. The Centennial is a genteel but formidable dame who likes to help others and who is more receptive to general questions that I may have regarding yours truly. The Golden Dawn Magical loves ritual, magickal, and spellwork readings.

If the warrior queens of antiquity in all their unfeigned, unfettered, blood-spattered glory were to be reincarnated into a Tarot deck, it would manifest as the Barbara Walker and nothing else. This is a woman whose unbending and tested courage is not a sham, and who you know would shoot straight with you. I never thought I would feel this kind of admiration for a deck with feminist leanings, but this one has my utmost respect.

Definitely, I feel every deck I have has its own unique voice. But they've never given me a name. Ultimately, for me, the thing that animates them and speaks through them is the spirit of the tarot - something old, knowing, and very unique. And often with a very odd sense of humour!

Yes and no, just depends upon the reading and the subject that we talk about sometimes he can be pretty straight forward while sometimes he can be confusing and keep thing hidden away.
