What are your thoughts on the wheel of fortune and 6 of cups together? These two seem to be following me around lately and pop up in different spreads regarding different topics, always the wheel followed by 6 of cups.

For me the wheel of fortune signifies a change, a movement, the wheel has started to turn and change is coming. 6 of cups references the past, friendships and other relationships. 6 of cups followed by the wheel I would say it would signified leaving the past behind. The wheel followed by 6 of cups seems to me could have many meanings. The wheel can be fate, by chance you will meet an old friend from the past. A reconnection. I've also read that these two cards together can signify soulmates. What are your thoughts?

Hi @Perdita

Of course context is everything, but focusing just on these two cards together a few things come to my mind

  1. An unexpected (an in a way outside of your control) reconnection with someone or even to an element from your past
  2. A surprising new development of an old relationship present in your life, like a new dynamic bringing up change and movement to a (maybe way too) familiar bond
  3. On a more individual level, both cards could refer to you. The cyclical aspect of the Wheel could highlight your own patterns. Attitudes, behaviours, mindset etc that are rooted in your past but are still present and having an impact in your life today, directly or indirectly. Perhaps the repetition of these two cards are trying to convey a need for you to become conscious of those patterns and question whether or not they still serve you. A need to allow an old cycle to come to a closure.

Like I said depending on the context it could take many different directions, but this is what came up from the top of my head.

Hope it is of some use🌻

Hi @maira since these two cards pairings have been popping up in different context I wanted to hear from other people, how they see these two cards together. I like the new development of an old relationship, I hadn't thought about that.

So let's think about each card...

The Wheel of Fortune (when upright at least) has a wheel turning forwards, bringing change and transition. It brings destiny, success and fortune, Waite said. It's a major card, we have no control of it. The wheel of our lives keeps on turning. But it's a future facing card. In ten years time, I don't need tarot cards to say that your life will be different to now. It's really about acceptance with this card, you have to go with the unpredictability of the cycles of our lives and sometimes just have faith ahead in whatever you believe in.

The 6 of Cups is the card of nostalgia. Getting joy from our memories and things from the past. Things always seems to be better in our childhood. This is a minor card, it's a choice that we take comfort in things in the past. It's also a bit of a safe card (there is a wall around the kids playing in the RWS card), it's staying in your comfort zone. I played some music the other day from my teenage years, it always seems to be everyone's fave era of their musical taste, this was the late 90's for me. I got joy listening to it and it brought back memories but it was my choice to go there. The Wheel of Fortune you have no choice, it's externally out of your control to go with the cycles of our lives.

The interesting thing about this combination coming up is they seem to be opposites, trusting the future and getting joy from the past, feeling safe from what you know.

I think a lot of societies and countries in the world have this vibe presently, traditional vs modernism. Nostalgia is safe and is a vote winner but when things are difficult, the promise of change brings hope. Reform has to happen in some way globally. At a global level, national level and also in our own lives, we have to accept change to move forwards.

So how can this manifest.....

- like you guys said, meeting someone from the past, an ex, a childhood friend, a high school friend. Perhaps they get back in touch with you. They are not the same as then, their situation will be different. If it's an ex, I would think cautiously before thinking of starting something again, very rarely does it work out again. As the saying goes, they are an ex for a reason

- I think this could be about going back to a location or a place from your past which has memories for you. Like your childhood house. My brother went back to his university campus and has such fun memories of the halls of residence he stayed in for the first 2 years but they were an old building and were bulldozed to have a new building built on it. It didn't exist anymore when he went to visit! I think this is a good example of this. Does the nostalgia even manifest in the same way now? I have been past my old Grandparents houses and they are totally changed now, it's sad for my nostalgia but they seemed to have young families living in each place. New people are enjoying them.

- this could be about a part of you changing. It's holding on to what is safe (the past) rather than facing the future which is unknown, this needs trust and faith. I know people on tik tok and instagram talk about "trust the process"as a meme but it really reflects this.

If you put the cards together, I used an RWS deck, you get the Wheel of Fortune with the red creature at the bottom looking towards the 6 of Cups but the 6 of Cups turn away and look away from the left. There is a conflict here between the past and moving on.

If we are using the direction of the cards, the 6 of Cups first might mean a need to move on from the past with the Wheel second. If the wheel is first, it might be needing to accept change happens, nothing remains the same.

I think another perspective is that idiom, "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

There could be a change from how things, traditions, beliefs, were done in the past. With a new found purpose.

Last week I had a work trip scheduled so the night before I did a three card spread for the next day. I got the wheel of fortune, 6 of cups and temperance. Well next morning when I showed up at the airport I got news that the trip had to be cancelled (the wheel), later that day I had a quick chat with old colleagues (6 of cups) and I'm not sure what temperance was referencing that day. So for that particular reading it was pretty straight forward 😄 I'm still waiting to see how other readings containing these two cards will turn out as they were more long term.
