3rd Ed. Yves Renaud Madenié Deck Available

On February 7, @fire cat pickles gave us a heads-up that a 3rd edition of the Yves Reynaud Pierre Madinié 1709 was in the offing. I’ve been checking frequently… and, today I see it’s there!

I emailed Tarot de Marseille Heritage twice asking if a new edition would be coming out soon, and never heard back, so I went ahead and got a 1st edition from eBay at what I believe was a fair price. But I’m really glad to see this: I’m a bit of a Conver fanatic, but I bet if you polled historical TdM aficianados, the Madenié would be the most favorite-ist deck. And it’s the only YR deck that has gone through multiple editions.

I think you may be happier with the 1st edition! Please me know if the corners are squared. (I didn't realize Yves rounds the corners in the 3rd edition.)

Wait, I’m not sure mine is 1st edition.

Says 2016 on the box… so must be 2nd, right?

Square corners.

No ghosting.

Doesn’t say 2nd edition anywhere.

The boxes look different for every edition. Here is the first one. The ghost lines are visible even on the box.

Good. Do you like square corners? I don't like rounded.

I like very very slightly rounded, like the YR Conver.

OK, so mine’s 2nd. Which is fine. (1st is cool tho)

I do too. I have super-gently rounded the corners on my copy, it was too painful to shuffle otherwise. And the whole point of having a deck (for me) is using it. So I used one of those small pointy scissors and made almost invisible cuts. The deck still looks perfectly square but is much gentler on the hands. I imagine this is that it would have become like over time anyway, but I didn’t want to wait 😊

For sure. I imagine that many prefer the second edition so it’s a good buy!

Just noticed that Le Pendu is the only figure in the Madenié who has pockets… but all his stuff would fall out because he’s upside down.

Talk about irony!  🙂

Some bad news from France: I got three decks from Tarot de Marseilles Heritage today... and on their two new publications (3rd ed. Madenié and Chosen 1672), they've gone to a pretty crappy tuck box instead of the really nice telescoping boxes they've used heretofore. The tuck boxes are flimsy, don't stay closed well, and, well, they're tuck boxes. 😕

Also, there’s an irregularity in how the cards in both decks are cut… a ridge or protrusion along the side of the cards, like there was a nick in the die they used to cut the cards from the sheet.

(Both of these do still come with the facsimile original wrappers.)

Really disappointed about this. I would email the shop and share my thoughts as diplomatically as possible, but they never answered any of the other three emails I sent, so don't know if I will bother.

Haven't had a chance to spend time with the decks yet. I did pull out the Chosson and am noting several interesting things right away... but I should wait until I can talk about them in a more considered way.

I don’t know if you are crafty @BradGad, but Here is a link from the forum with how to make really nice boxes.  I tried it and really liked the results.

Thanks, @MuninnMissinHuginn ... Good info. I may try that.

Mainly I was whimpering about Tarot do Marseille Heritage's perceived drop in quality.

Ooops, sorry😜, Whimper away❣️  I am understand the sadness of depreciating quality.

I just realized the negative connotations of whinge.  I just have always liked the way it sounds.  I changed it to whimper, with my apologies.

Whinging does sound better than whining, though.

I think.

I am surprised to hear about the tuck box. Knowing this, I probably won’t be purchasing any new decks from them. I think they are moving in the wrong direction, for my liking. Cleaning up the images a bit is one thing, but then there was the rounded corners, and now the tuck box.. What you say about the printing irregularities sounds like such a bummer. I wouldn’t be happy either 😕 But you did get a good second edition copy of Madenie earlier, right? I have three of their earlier decks and this has made me treasure them even more.

Right, I did get a 2nd ed Madenié.

Another thing… the new boxes have this glossy, plastic raised image for the pics… and the bold text is glossy and raised too.

It’s kinda cool, but does not fit at all with the historical vibe.

Of course, all the ones printed before this February and still in stock will have the nice boxes.

Sounds like YR intends to go Grimaud 2.0 with the Madenie.

Then again, the french do seem a good deal "livelier" in dealing with their packs, I can well imagine that they actually requested the tucky!
