Before reading the meanings I wrote my own for each card, which is usually very different. I’m aware this disregards the creators input, but the results make more sense. When I ask what the weather will be the following day, and the card drawn supposedly means “Enemy, danger, hostility” but then it is perfectly sunny and calm, that takes my faith in them away. But if my interpretation of the card is “Relaxed, dogs playing, fish swimming” then it makes sense. Same for any questions about the near future. Obviously can’t tell for anything beyond that. Does anyone else find this?

It's worth experimenting with this, if your interpretation gives more accurate results than that is the one to go for 🙂

I think our own interpretations and intuition give a more personal and better reading. However I wonder how you got your meanings? Like if they just come to you and you go with them, why use the cards? They are meant as a tool to your intuition and most people read the card images or go with their feelings and thoughts as they look at it.

I use the divinatory meaning and artist's intention as the base of the meaning and then put my own intuitive reading on top of that.

Not sure how to answer ... I mostly follow "standard" meanings for standard tarot decks ... but I definitely have my own meanings which I blend according to context. I seldom slavishly follow standard meanings ... but I also respect that certain decks (RWS, TdM) have "classical" meanings.

Which tarot deck are you using? I think that depends a lot. If its a more modern interpretive deck vs. a classic deck.

It's strange. I'm a very left-brain person, so I mostly rely on traditional/book meanings for my interpretations. But on the rare occasion that I instinctively override them, it almost always turns out correct.

Since you stated that the results make more sense when you turn to your personal meanings, you may want to trust your guts more.

Intuitive reading is a big thing for some people, but almost non-existent for others; as others have said, you need to go with what feels right. My understanding of how Tarot works (caveat: who really knows?!:cheesy:) means that the message that you are 'meant to' receive is tied to the message that you'll naturally read into the cards... if you're the sort of person who sees alternative meanings leaping to the fore, then the rights cards will turn up to provide the opportunity for that to happen, and your intuition will prod you in that direction. If you read strictly 'by the book' then the book meanings will be the relevant ones.

The degree of intuition or personal meanings also seems to develop with the reader (not surprising if you're having a conversation with your disembodied consciousness, which is what I personally think is going on): I've found that when I've first started using a deck, it's the book meanings that work best... but ultimately the meanings shift or even fade into the background as your relationship with it grows. I don't think being left-brain focused really matters, by the way... I'm a scientist, but intuition is a separate thing from emotional thinking. It underlies both halves of our psyche, and you can train yourself to listen to it more, whichever thinking style is more your forte.

I think definitely if you get more sense and accuracy from your own meanings then that's obviously what works for you.

I love that everyone reads differently. I mostly read intuitively, although I do know basic traditional meanings of the cards I get more sense when I rely on the feeling I get from the cards in front of me.

I also don't read to predict future events as such, more for information on how a situation is and advice on paths to take. I did laugh the other day though when both of my daily cards had snow in the background and it snowed that day 🙄.

LOL I've spent YEARS studying history and occult symbolism of cards ... and yet so many times they're just so freakin' LITERAL. It makes me laugh too. This is what I love about tarots. One minute they're speaking neo Platonic philosophy ... the next ... Tower just means you're going to do some demo work for your house remodel.

Pre-written meanings - whether they are your own or the deck creators - can in my opinion only take you so far. Context is key. I don’t think deck creators or tarot authors intend for their general descriptions to cover weather predictions or other very specific type of readings. It’s just meant as a a tool to help you understand the basic core energy of each card. Also, don’t forget to look at the card and apply the visual cues to the context and to the question at hand. Like @debs said, card depictions can hold very literal clues.

I'll never forget the day Roseanne (anyone heard from her ?) did a reading where there were a lot of bees on a card, and then she went to collect her mail; there was a bees' nest in her mailbox and she was badly stung.

That's interesting, but I'm wondering what card deck she was using.  I don't recall any decks with lots of bees on a particular card.  Any idea how this worked?

Hey, I usually do readings in the morning or at night, just for something to do really. And I don’t come up with any type of answer before seeing the cards. E.G in the example used, I had no idea how the weather would be the next day, but the card I drew showed dogs playing under a bright Moon. So I assumed it would be a nice calm day. But The card meant “Danger, Enemies, Hostility”, which is the opposite. My interpretation of the card worked, the definition did not.

So much this!  I have a base generic meaning for cards, but the art on the cards adds a whole lot more depending on the question.  Some symbols may really stand out, the atmosphere of the card may be palpable in its position, the relationship between the cards in the spread, etc.  For me Tarot has a lot of layers, questions and context really drive my readings.  The cards do not have one simple ascribed meaning, there is usually a range.  Some decks look at some aspects of the "traditional" meaning deeper than others, or might not even mention of show some aspects of the "traditional" meaning.  In addition, like words, when you string cards together with the question you get context to apply.  So my meanings for one card will vary from spread to spread.

Well, certainly lots of bees!  Is that the RWS equivalent of the Sun?  Or do most of the cards in this deck have bees on them? I'm  not familiar with this deck at all.

According to Amazon, the deck has been out since 2014.  I don't personally own it as I don't find the artwork appealing.
