When your birth or year card show up

If you care about calculating your birth and/or year card, do you place any specific significance on it if it shows up in a reading?

This year (I go birthday to birthday with the year cards) is all about the Hanged Man for me and he showed up yesterday when I was having a not very good day. I'm thinking it could mean that I gotta look to my year card and the greater lessons that I'm learning and trust that it will work itself out if I hang in there (letting go and things sorting out without me being obsessive about it is something I struggle with but the Hanged Man is helping me see it's a good thing), but I'm really curious to what other people think.

Hoping I'm posting in the right subforum!

I can definitely see the Hanged Man as a positive card for when we're obsessing too much about one aspect of something. Reminding us that there are other ways of looking at things.

So, now I have to ask, how does one calculate one's birth card and year card?

There are a few different ways to go about it, I remember a thread on AT about it as well as a youtube video where they did a few different calculations. The method I prefer is the one in Mary K Greer's Tarot For Your Self, which is also where I was introduced to the idea:

day + month + year, then add together the numbers you get so you have a number under 22 (22 is The Fool, so you don't have to do anything with it, 23 would be 2+3= 5, The Hierophant)

So let's do a hypothetical person born March 23rd, 1983:

        23

+    03

+ 1983

= 2009 = 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11, which is Justice (or Strength if you prefer the pre-RWS numbers)

My birth card is The Hierophant, haha. Nor my favourite tarot card but I'm working on understanding it better thanks to the whole birth card thing. I'm sure not everyone bothers with them but I think they're fun - they're supposed to tell you something about what your current lifetimes purpose is. Seems they are a combo of numerology and tarot.

Then there is also the issue of the soul card... From what I understand of Marys book, if you get a double digit of 22 or lower that card is your birth card, but if you add the two numbers together you get the soul card. So our hypothetical person has The High Priestess as their soul card since 1 + 1 = 2. This is supposed to be your souls purpose through all your lifetimes, so I guess if you believe in rebirth/reincarnation and all that it would make sense. I don't know if I do and either way it's still 5 and the old Hierophant for me. Complicated stuff!

For year cards you just add your birthday to the year you're calculating. Since it's the birthday you're using I have year cards from birthday to birthday, but some people use them for the entire year (or maybe have the influence of the new card in addition to the old one until their b-day and then it's the main focus).

If I'm the example the calculation is as such:

      3

+    9

+2017

= 2029 = 2 + 0 + 2 + 9 = 13, the Death card this year, but I see it as coming into play in September since that's my birthday. The Hanged Man is still active and I believe I've been feeling more if its effects.

I hope this made sense !

My birth cards are VII. The Chariot, and XVI. The Tower. Both have showed up in readings for me, and when the Tower did show up, it ended up being reversed, which seemed to me that I'd been in the process of dodging a bullet of some sort!

I take birth card appearances to be sort of like exclamation points, or otherwise defining what my current state of being/current self should do in dealing with a particular situation.

Usually, my birth cards appear when the reading tells me that I need to try harder for something, or otherwise, it signifies a warning for me to be extra conscientious of my surroundings: "watch out, otherwise you can find yourself in a situation where the lesson will be a hard and arduous experience." Wondering if this is the same for others!  ???

No significance for me. I just take it as a mathematical cipher someone made up one day. One clear sign of this is that it uses the Gregorian Calendar.

I'm always a little pleased when the Star comes up, since it's my birth card in the sense of it being assigned Aquarius in the Golden Dawn/RWS/Thoth (plus it's just a nice card). And the 6 of Swords, which is even more specific, assigned the decan of Aquarius in which I was born. I don't do the counting you mentioned, because it doesn't really inspire me. But I think if you find it meaningful to calculate it in that way, then it can be meaningful that it appears in a reading for yourself.

Rose Lalonde, I'd love to hear more about the decans & starsigns assiciations!

Hi Hedera[/member]  In the img you can use the yellow rings to match your birth date with its minor (and court). (I know some don't include these associations in tarot readings at all, and others do but assign it differently than the GD, so again, I think it depends on what's meaningful to you.)

The majors: Aries – Emperor,  Taurus – Hierophant,  Gemini – Lovers,  Cancer – Chariot,  Leo – Strength/Lust,  Virgo – Hermit,  Libra – Justice/Adjustment,  Scorpio – Death,  Sagittarius – Temperance/Art,  Capricorn – Devil,  Aquarius – Star,  Pisces – Moon

I personally don't look out for them (and usually have forgotten them already!). I see them as separate things, cards calculated by mathematics and a reading that has been shuffled and draws on my intuition and interpretations. So I don't use them in my readings but I do sometimes look out for the significator that represents me the most. In my own mind I see them as separate parts of tarot.
