I am curious how others do readings where there is no question.

I have an approach I call the four card three card reading I developed from various sources. It started as a three card reading, then I added another card. The meaning of the fourth card varies depending on the sitter.

Take a typical reading. Some will react positively because you knew all about them. These people want practical answers.

The identical reading will also get a reaction of disappointment. They will say you just told them what they already know. They want mystical answers.

You don't need to get deep into the reading to tell the difference. Usually it will be obvious before the reading starts.

So the basic reading I think I got from a Jenna Matlin video. The first three cards are energy (of the current time), obstacle, and advice.

I lay them out left to right. Next the fourth card is placed above the first three.

For the person looking for practical advice this card is an action they can take.

For the person seeking a mystical experience this card is a message from the universe.

I am interested in how others approach a reading with no question.

Hi @Minotaur - welcome to TT&M!

I like this spread. I use Tarot mostly for spiritual and therapeutic introspection and will try it soon. I'm thinking of adding a fifth card, and designating the fourth for practical advice and the fifth for a message from the universe.

As to how I approach a reading with no question, I have a spread called the Axis of Time and the Axis of Place that I designed myself. I'm going to try to find and link a description. Feel free to remind me or not if I forget! I just finished a two hour write up of a reading in my Journal, Welcome Back to Grandma's House (https://www.thetarotforum.com/forums/topic/13761-welcome-back-to-grandmas-house/?do=findComment&comment=249331 in case you're interested) and I'm soooo tired.

Oh duh that reading IS with the Axis of Time and the Axis of Place. It gives the general idea.

I'll be saving this for future reference if I decided to do readings for others. I spend 50/50 of my time asking my deck a question or not for myself. When I don't, I can connect it to a thought or situation pretty fast.

You can use tarot as a tool to dive into your subconscious mind, see what problems and questions you are dealing with, and help you work on those issues.

You can do readings on anything you want. You can do them on the weather. You can do them on the stock market. In fact, you can do them on anything.

Normally i do a general reading.

Or, use any kind of general reading spread.

Sometimes they dont have questions indeed

I'm totally fine with "no question". For clients I nearly always start with a 10-card modification of celtic cross as a "general check-in". I normally don't want to go into specifics until we've had a chance to see what the CARDS want to talk about.

And yes ... I know I'm anthropomorphizing cardboard and ink ... but in my 40+ years of doing this ... I've learned the question someone asks isnt always what's truly on their mind or in their heart. Sometimes it is ... sometimes not. A general reading cuts to the chase.

Saw this in an I Ching book. When they can't think of a question ask them, "What do you want to change in your life?".

This is fairly common.  I simply say something like:  Shall we just see what the Universe (or God/dess or your Guides etc.) wishes to tell you?  Usually then I shall just do my 'go to' 3-card reading:  Position 1:  What you need to know.  Position 2:  Advice.  Position 3:  Outcome.  This is often informed, as well, by Position 1:  Past.  Position 2:  Present.  Position 3:  Future.

I'll usually have them choose a significator, shuffle, cut the deck into 4 piles with each pile representing an aspect of life. The pile the significator is found in is usually the area that they're most concerned with. Then I'll do a reading on that.

If it's someone who's just being obstinate and are trying to test me by purposely not telling me, I usually skip over those people for readings. It's one thing if you're not sure or are too shy to admit what you want read, it's another to be purposely malicious for your superiority complex.
