Deshy Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Hello! Just wanna say Hi and that I'm new to tarot and I bought my first deck. Now what? Lol I don't know.
gregory Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 (edited) Take it out and look thoroughly at the cards. Write down when each means to you, and compare them with what the companion guide says. Make stories with them. That kind of thing. Spend time with the deck. Have fun with it. Welcome to the forum. Edited May 1, 2023 by gregory Autocorrect is insane....
Nemia Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Welcome! Which deck is it? Do you have a good book at hand? Read, read, read. Read the cards as good as you can (even as beginner, the images speak to you), read your book, and just enjoy the journey. We're all learners, there is no point where you can say: okay, now I KNOW tarot.

I actually DO say I know Tarot. But I also continue reading and researching and learning. That will never end until I die. @Deshy I'm very old skool and I recommend starting with a classic book like Eden Gray from 1960. Dated, but classic. She's the OG Godmother of modern tarot. If you like Marseille and historic styles Yoav Ben Dov. Classic for that style. I suggest this b/c I notice some decks come with great companion booklets whilst other companion booklets are awful. If your deck has a good companion booklet - Yay! if not ... that's where a good old fashioned classic can help. Edited May 1, 2023 by Misterei

Deshy Posted May 4, 2023 Author Posted May 4, 2023 <<blush>> Thanks a lot for all the warm welcome notes. So much to learn 😘
Grizabella Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 (edited) I found that starting out with the Rider Waite deck was what helped me the most. I fought doing that for a long time, which cost me plenty of money and time I could have spent learning. I thought the Rider Waite deck was the ugliest, least interesting deck I could see. I got the book Tarot for Dummies and a Rider Waite finally and then I was on my way. Interacting on the old AT forum plus those two things were key for me. Once I learned the basics (which didn't happen overnight by any means) then I found I could read with any deck. There are Marseilles, Rider Waite and Thoth decks to choose from. I chose Rider Waite partly because I didn't really know about the others. You could check them all out to see which one appeals to you most. They're all variations of Tarot. Most of the knock-off decks follow the Rider Waite system. Edited May 25, 2023 by Grizabella more to add
