Hello i'm fairly new to Tarot.

Excited to be  here with you guys and to learn.

I have a RWS deck, and whilst i keep running into examples of people suggesting that Marseilles is much better, i prefer the look of the RWS and for me, for now - that's enough.

Glad to be here.

Welcome to the community @HermSeekr 😀:animated-smileys-signs-085::78496:

The nice thing about tarot and other divination systems is that you can take it in whatever direction you want! I would suggest studying and getting well acquainted with the RWS, it's a great deck for starting out! When you feel ready, look at some new avenues and TdM is one branch you can go in." Which is better?" is really personal opinion and you can experiment with many avenues ahead in future 🙂

Here is our big thread of free learning resources if it is helpful. Most of those use RWS as the deck -

I totally think you should play around with other systems! I've dipped my toe in Thoth and am trying to learn more...

I think that you are wise to follow your preference of really digging into the RWS.  It's an excellent foundation for going anywhere with Tarot.  Yes, there are many, many different avenues to explore.  Plenty of time for that once you feel super confident and comfortable with working with your RWS deck.  Also, I cannot imagine why anyone would recommend that a Marseilles deck is better for someone who is beginning their Tarot journey.  The pips, Minor Arcana cards, are not illustrated -- so it's much less accessible.  Best wishes and Have More Fun!

Welcome!

I think you should dive into the RWS if that’s what is calling you!

I started myself with the Marseille a few years ago and ended up not following through as I couldn’t connect with the minor arcanas. I got back into tarot last year with RWS and made huge improvements, although with Tarot is a never ending learning path! I recently bought the Egyptian tarot from the Church of Light, it is very interesting, but I feel like for me the RWS is the best foundation!

At the end of the day follow what feels best for you!

Thanks for the replies guys. loving the vibes here. Yeah i love my RWS deck but i need to do a lot more practice. i need to learn some spreads coz so far i've just been messing around with 3 + 5 card spreads. The 5 card spread i'm not even sure is a thing (the way i do it). When i feel the 3 cards hasn't told me enough, I add 2 more and usually get a better picture.

My understanding needs much learning and practice. :)

Also, I've been looking for a borderless Thoth. But can't find anywhere.

Yea, practice is the key! That’s why I joined the forum because it’s not easy to find people to practice with, besides family and friends, sometimes!

In terms of spreads, I recently read an article from a very good tarot reader who suggests to practice with the Celtic Cross as beginners. We might think that’s harder than the three cards spread, but in reality it’s easier as you have more context with 10 cards rather than three!

In fact what you do to clarify is an absolute common thing one do to clarify. Sometimes I clarify one card with 3 extra and I identify one to give the vibe like a Major Arcana if I have one, or a court card.

Anyways, good stuff!

welcome again 😊

The number of cards really depends on the spread or what you are asking. I find 3 cards perfect for almost all my readings to be honest but I go bigger to get more insight or it's a complicated situation. There is a thread about the Celtic Cross and beginners around here if you want me to dig it out. But the forum members strongly suggested  in it, not to go into it as an absolute beginner. All the old tarot books only ever suggested that spread. It's hard to do and we get people coming to tarot, doing it, get stuck and then need help. Also CC is a great spread to give you all your options but people use it wrongly a lot and it doesn't fit the question. Go with smaller spreads until you feel confident. You can get so much from a single card, I used to do a daily card each day for a year starting out!

When you get to 5 posts, you can see the exchange and reading areas :78496:

Every month we have reading circles where you are paired with a random forum member and you read together on the exercise or spread of that month and then you give feedback to each other. There are deadlines for these parts but you get around 2 weeks for the reading. It is one of the best ways to practice and they are popular and we have regulars who join in every month. They post their sign up threads around the beginning of the month, so look out for them. You can see what is going on each month at the link in my sig below ⬇️ but you need 5 posts again. That is a great way to practice with others 🙂

I agree.  When I first started learning Tarot many years ago, I did practice with a lot of Celtic Cross readings.  They just never resonated with me personally -- maybe I brook at the name 'Celtic' cross even though that is a big part of my ancestry.  The CC seems unwieldy and just too much information to deal with.  Now I'm systematically moving through Benebell Wen's Holistic Tarot.  I'm starting in the 'beginner's' section because I don't want to miss anything.  I'm at the place now where I'm being told to do 6 Celtic Cross readings.  I am looking forward to learning something great through this experience!

As a professional reader of 22+ years, the majority of my readings for people are 3 card readings.  They are absolutely terrific.  Versatile.  To the point.  Sometimes I shall do several for one issue, but usually one is enough.  Occasionally I do pull a 4th card as a clarifying card.  I have a list of 7 variations of a 3-card reading that address just about everything.  These, along with several other spreads, form the basis of my beginner's class on Tarot Spreads.  (CC does not make an appearance here!)

guys thankyou all for the replies, these are super helpful for a beginner like me- to give me some direction. Really appreciate it. I'll have some time in the next couple of night to explore the forum better and get aquainted with the site. Much appreciated
