Guest Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 This is a card that I struggle with a lot. I know that Hierophant means traditions, marriage and conventional living but I always felt like there is more to this card than that. Can anyone else add to the interpretation of this card? I would like to get a better understanding of it. the hierophant upright would be anything conventional the hierophant reversed would be unconventional life or relationship. Things that fall outside of societal expectations and/or rules. Or it could be someone who is a hypocrite. Use religion as something to hide behind. Preaches but doesn't follow what they are preaching. Or a radical religious person. What more can you add to the interpretation of the hierophant upright and reversed?
November Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Hi @Cati, The Hierophant upright for me represents the "right thing to do" according to your own beliefs. These can be related to a certain religion, tradition, family values, society rules etc so in this sense you're "conventional", but in a positive sense, because these values are also your values. The flip side is then going against all of this, so by becoming "unconventional", because you don't share these specific values. However, we know well how society/religion/family/tradition etc can make us feel wrong when we go against them (Hierophant Rx). Anyway the important thing is to be happy, who cares if you're conventional or unconventional. I hope this helps.
Esclarmonde Posted September 11, 2023 Posted September 11, 2023 I agree with what November posted - it's my own take on the Hierophant, but I'd also add that it might signify a sense of duty emanating from the traditions and beliefs (upright), and in relation to a person - someone who is true to their beliefs and acts according to them. As for marriage, I always think of the Lovers, but the Hierophant might signal marriage if other cards also point in that direction, and it could mean a church wedding or a marriage according to an established religious tradition (whatever it might be). Reversed, the duties might prove to be too much, traditions and conventions are used to shackle instead of being a connection to others. As a person, they could be a hypocrite, or a sanctimonious person who hates anyone who dares to disagree with them on matters relating to belief.

LOL I don't read Lovers as a romantic card at all ... but i definitely read Hierophant as a marriage card. Also churches, spiritual groups, or non-profits and charities. I don't read reversals ... but the flip side is: marriage problems, a corrupt church or even a cult (depending on other cards), a corrupt charity, or a non-profit organization that's struggling. Of course it depends on context and the other cards. I don't stress the "conventional/unconventional" meaning of Hierophant. LOL usually clients ask about love or money ... hence marriage or a non-profit organization are the most common ways I read this card.
Guest Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 @November thanks. The value that the hierophant hold are societal and religious.
Guest Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 @EsclarmondeI can see that with the reversed hierophant. Someone who is extreme in their relation or maybe a hypocrite as well? Do as I say, not as I do.
Guest Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 @Misterei Yes, I always saw the hierophant as the way you describe it. I'm curious, what is your take on the lovers?

I'm curious, what is your take on the lovers? Without going into esoteric meanings, Lovers is a partnership of any kind and a choice about the partnership. I take this from the older TdM card even though I often use RWS decks. This card changed over time. I'm old skool };> Should I stay or should I go? Should I commit or should I break up? Should I quit or stay with the job? I often get it for past life relationships ... but ... past life doesn't always mean hearts and flowers.
