I was wondering what books do you think are for the Advanced Tarot Student? I would say Tarot Decoded from Elizabeth Hazel. But there must be more books, which focus on more than only the card meanings, so that you can become a better card reader. What books would you advise? Thanks.

The first one that comes to mind is "78 Degrees of Wisdom" by Rachel Pollack. You'll want the blue-bound book that contains both volumes - it was originally 2 volumes; Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, then combined into the single volume.

Tarot Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. I like this one better even for a beginner. It's her newer book.

Tarot Beyond the Basics by---well, my age wiped the author's name out as soon as I thought of the book---but it's easy to just type that in on Amazon to get the book to come up.

Those two are very good, though. I got more out of Tarot Wisdom than I ever did out of 78 Degrees. That's just what worked best for me, though. Lots of people prefer 78 Degrees.

I believe that Tarot beyond the basics is from Anthony Louis.

I like the minors more in 78 degrees of wisdom, and the majors more in Tarot wisdom from Rachel Pollack.

If I were to read tarot books again, I'd opt for Benbell Wen's.

It is 900 pages on a kindle, overwhelms me at this forgetful stage of life

The 2 books I would like to mention are

Tarot Shadow Work by Christine Jette

and

Professional Tarot

- also by Christine Jette

I finally found my copy of "Seventy-eight Degrees of Wisdom" shortly after I had posted my earlier reply. I've started reading it again and it is still excellent! I always get something out of it. I also wanted to correct myself - the later edition which combined the old Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, is a purple-colored book, not blue.

Definitely the following:

1. The Book of Thoth by Aleister Crowley

2. Tarot Wisdom by Rachel Pollack

3. Qabalistic Tarot by Robert Wang

4. The New Golden Dawn Ritual Tarot by Chic and Sandra Cicero

If you really want to steep yourself in the Golden Dawn system (and its various offshoots), these books would be very helpful once you're familiar with the basics.

Rachel Pollack really seems to be a must and it seems they have her books at the public library! I can't wait to get my hands on the 78 degrees of wisdom!  :o

I cannot recommend her enough, Onaorkal. 78 Degrees of Wisdom is definitely in my Top 10, but it does tend to get didactic at times, and people complain that in that book she focuses too much on the underlying myths and historical anecdotes of each card so that she did not spend as much space on their more practical divinatory meanings. I personally have no problem with that because the worlds and stories she explores are just so enchanting. But if you do get tired of it, just give her one more chance with Tarot Wisdom. Aside from the aforesaid legends and histories, she gives comparative meanings for each card from different Tarot authors and traditions across different centuries.

Happy reading!  :) And yeah, kudos to your public library for their great selection.

Thank you EmpyreanKnight, I hope they also carry Tarout Wisdom then!

I love having the possibility of checking out books at the public library since I don't have unlimited funds! Then when there are books I really enjoy, I hope I find them secondhand and otherwise I sometimes splurge and buy them new!

Second hand books are great! I only know of one used-book store here in town, but they're huge and very careful about the condition of the books they buy. Which means, you find good to excellent condition for a very reasonable price. Of course, the drawback is that if you're looking for something specific, they may not have it. However, I have purchased several books and quite a few decks there. And browsing is always fun ... ;D
