52 Card Lenormand Deck (or Decks)?

Recommended Posts

When I was a child I had a deck of Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards, when I started to collect Tarot Decks, I bought an Gypsy Witch Deck again due to nostalgia.  After some reading I found out that they are considered to be a Lenormand Deck by with 52 instead of 36.  Are there other Lenormand Decks with 52 cards.  The cards that are in the 36 card deck are also represented in this deck.  I was just curious.  When I was a kid I hadn't clue on how to read them.  They have the playing card insets on them as well.  Has any of you every read with this Deck? Can it be taken seriously although it varies from the stand Lenormand?  Obviously it's not a good deck to start with at any rate.

I will return to Lenormand, but am not currently learning another system from the late 1900s because intuitively I am drawn to it.

That is interesting never came across it so not sure what it is. As far as I know Lenormand only has 36 cards.

What are the additional cards?

It's basically the Lenormand cards + 16 extra cards and then covers a full playing card deck (52 cards in a standard playing card deck)

I was always put off by it, it has negative reviews online and people seem to hate the art + verses on the cards. I wanted a new cartomancy deck some years ago and it was between this and L'oracle de Belline. I went with the Belline and love it.

For some reason, people seem to find it harder to read than a standard Lenormand deck but you use it in the same way with the same rules. It seems to help if you read playing cards to understand each card in this deck 🙂 .

I've moved this thread to the main Lenormand section as we are discussing decks.

There is an old discussion thread on the forum about them -

I'm not planning to read with it as I really want to learn the 36 card standard Lenormand deck. I bought my first copy at the Five and Ten (now I'm showing my age).  I bought it again as a collectible than anything else.

I picked up a GW deck awhile ago as well, as the 'crude' colouring and pulpy feeling appealed to me, although I don't really read with it as I also find it 'hard' even though you use it in essentially the same way as the Lenormand.  The directions on the cards 'seem' like they have alternate meanings to the normal Lenormand, but when I compared them, most of the writing on corresponding cards are just derived from the 'Phillipe Lenormand' instructions.  I suppose a part of the problem with reading with it is those extra cards, which are more unfamiliar to work with.

The GW deck is also missing 1 of the regular Lenormand cards, the Cross!  In terms of imagery, the closest equivalent is, IMO, the Order, which depicts a Maltese Cross medal, but the meanings of the two cards are very different.

Check out the Maybe Lenormand by Ryan Edward.

The Maybe Lenormand is a good choice for people that are interested in expanded Lenormand sets, which are also based on existing cards as it draws from a couple of different sets.

Something I'd like to do would be to create a spreadsheet or something that collects the different images and meanings scattered across different vintage Lenormand-like sets, such as the GW set above, the Valmor Old Gypsy Fortune cards, the Whitman Fortune Telling cards, etc.

Oh, so you did end up picking up a new copy?  I was going to say you should get it again if you are drawn to it and want it as a collectable, but just be careful of knock-off copies - I picked one up off eBay a few months ago and am pretty sure it was a pirated copy.

Hey everyone, moving this to Cartomancy as that is where it should be.

Lenormand only consist of 36 cards. However, there are a few expanded versions which are still considered to be Lenormand Decks. Because the deck creators added additional cards to the existing system.

I want to learn Lenormand but I can only focus on system at a time. The traditional deck with the 36 cards.

Also, while there is talk about the Lenormand and GW deck cards having different meanings within the overlapping symbols, if you compare the original Phillip Lenormand reading instructions to what's written on the GW cards, they are actually mostly the same, with only slight variations.  The playing card inserts are completely different, however, so ultimately it is still a different system.
