Scholarship has moved on greatly since the 1980's with numerous biographies being written that present Crowley and his life in a more balanced and nuanced way. But the caricature of infamy that was created mostly by the tabloid press of his day lives on. It takes an open and inquisitive mind to be prepared to see through this. 

 

I'm not sure where you are going with your comments about bdsm. While it's not my cup of tea, it is a perfectly valid form of sexual expression for those people who are attracted to it. (Maybe even some members of this very forum.) While you can try to use it as a stick to beat Crowley with, he would have probably enjoyed it.

What exactly do you mean by Satanist? Crowley rejected the Judeo-Christian worldview which includes Satan. While Crowley famously declared, "The Devil does not exist," he was well aware that ignorant and superstitious people in the past ascribed evil and devilish intent to all manner of innocent things. To this end he decided to "let names stand as they are." It is an incredibly effective filter mechanism for people of a certain mindset.

Yes, he knew Magick (orders & ceremonial) (and created Thelema) very well but I don’t toot his horn. I don’t toot any Satanist’s horn. Nor do I spread information about what he did with Magick but neglect to inform others of the reality his evil nature. Transparency is key and being responsible is crucial.

I hope this helps someone know what kind of 

vile man Crowley was.
