I like 'em gothic, gory, gratuitous, or any combination thereof. 😅 Off topic but do you like that Italian witchy horror Suspira? That was one of my favorite movies ever ... horror or otherwise ... but now it would scare me to re-watch it.

Although my taste in European horror mostly run along the likes of Jean Rollin. And yes, that makes me an awful person ahahaha. 😁 I may be in the minority on this but I also like the remake with Dakota Johnson. Not as stylish, with its drab palette and East German (I think) setting, but it has a solid story and a bunch of grotesqueries to make it lively enough for me.

On 4/25/2024 at 4:27 AM, nord_drache said: Saw a commercial tonight for a horror movie called Tarot, being released beginning of May. Not being a horror movie fan I won't be checking it out. The commercial shows it based off a weird Tarot deck being used for reading amongst a handful of people . . . with horrific things coming out of no where (I seem to remember other movies of this style advertised in the past.) I come off wondering how much creative license will occur in its depiction of tarot readings - heard movie character saying the hanged man a sign of total surrender . . . Will it trigger a surge of interest - making Tarot trendy and / or will it give our community a black eye / battering making us look diabolic. Any thoughts on this . . . or even interests in seeing it . . . Jim I just saw it. It is based on the book (it says so in the credits) - but very VERY loosely. That said - the book's author was involved in the script. Some of the readings are well done, others not so well - like real life, really (though that Hanged Man one made more sense in context.) There are sound bits and less sound bits, great effects, and it's all a bit schlocky. Not at all learned, but IMNVHO not at all utter rubbish like some movie references are. I - with my limited Astrology nolledge - thought the tie between the two was well done. And I WANT the deck they had ! And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT ! (and was gobsmacked to see a rather excellent Irish actor open the door to her home at one point after the students' frantic knocking and her repeated GO AWAYs - Olwen Fouéré, It was a lovely shock, that. She's so good.) Edited May 7, 2024 by gregory
elegy Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 We watch a lot of horror movies, but I don't know that I want to bother with this one... have a feeling it's just going to make me angry because they're doing it wrong. My husband refuses to watch any movies about things I'm passionate about with me if there's a good chance they're getting it wrong anyway. Apparently pointing out all the ways that they did something incorrectly ruins the fun of the movie, my bad... I think it's going to cause a surge in fascination with tarot amongst the younger, edgier crowd, but I doubt it's going to create any kind of panic that the rest of us have to deal with. (Famous last words?)
gregory Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 (edited) You know one thing that often bugs me. It seems that while it's OK to get so many things "wrong" for a fun movie in other genres, tarotistas won't stand for it. It was a piece of very good fun, spot on in places and not so spot on in other places., What fun movies take the trouble - even NEED to take the trouble - to get everything exactly "right" ? I know there were "errors". It didn't stop me enjoying it for one second (well, actually there was a short bit I didn't enjoy, but that was all about my own claustrophobia and nothing to do with tarot !) The makers never for one moment suggested they were "getting it right" - and anyway - when you think of it - you have here a story about teenagers reading cards - in actual fact, the story's progression didn't need the readings to be "right" - and many teenagers wouldn't have a clue, and would just have been playing - as these ones were - messing about at a birthday party with a deck they'd found. The reader hadn't wanted to do it and never claimed she was expert, though she had some knowledge. It's not supposed to engender panic. It's a simple story which involved any viewer who wasn't sitting there trying to pick holes. It was a fun story with great fx. Sometimes we need to get over ourselves and not take everything as if it had to match a text book. I fear your husband is right there; if we can't suspend disbelief and just enjoy something, it's a sad life. Sure, people should maybe go after that new movie Napoleon, as it claim to be history and isn't and students might get their essays wrong after seeing it - but this..... Edited May 8, 2024 by gregory

elegy Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Just the way my brain works, I'm afraid. I'm not saying it won't be fun for others, and I'm sure my husband will watch and enjoy it, but this one is not for me. Not everyone is obligated to watch every movie, especially when there are plenty of equally fun horror movies out there that I will enjoy.
KiMo Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 I'm definitely going to give this a watch! The trailer makes it look like really good fun. Speaking for myself I'm not concerned about inaccuracies, I think the whole point of the horror genre is the suspension of disbelief in order to bring about a catharsis of sorts. But that's just me being nerdy 😅 I absolutely love horror films but just like you @Misterei I struggle with certain themes within the genre now, I'm not sure why that is... I seem to be getting very sensitive as I get older. On 4/30/2024 at 1:16 AM, Akhilleus said: Giallo FTW! Although my taste in European horror mostly run along the likes of Jean Rollin. The original Argento version of Suspiria is a masterpiece in my opinion! I also love Profondo Rosso. And I had to laugh at your mention of Jean Rollin, my partner works in film and is a real buff, he wanted to watch some Rollin and sold it to me as 'sexy vampires' 😂 Apologies as I realise this is getting a little off topic, but I'll take any chance to geek out about genre films!

It just doesn't matter in terms of enjoyment. 2 hours ago, elegy said: Just the way my brain works, I'm afraid. I know I OUGHT to have wanted to see Back to Black - but even though the reviews are awesome and everyone I know says I DO want to see it, I just don't. It's the idea that if movies are inaccurate they are unwatchable that would make me sad. Almost every movie out there is crawling with "inaccuracies" of one sort or another - not to mention continuity glitches and digital watches on prehistoric cave-people.
Guest Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Seriously excited to watch this! Hope I can squeeze in some time this weekend. 15 hours ago, KiMo said: And I had to laugh at your mention of Jean Rollin, my partner works in film and is a real buff, he wanted to watch some Rollin and sold it to me as 'sexy vampires' Ah, so your partner is a man of culture as well. 😁 And yup, I used to have a cast-iron stomach when it comes to horror. Throw anything at me and I ain't flinchin'. But now there are certain themes I'd rather not entertain. I can certainly power through them, but we only have so many leisure hours in a day so yeah.

thornapple Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 gonna watch this with my bestfriend to see how many tarot stereotypes we can point and laugh at "never use someone else's deck" is... new to me? i wouldn't let just anyone read with my decks aside from my bestie but we read with each other's decks just fine

But even then, yeah I've never encountered that adage before. There is an actual thread here on Tarot myths and I don't think that I even came across it there. What's interesting is that I have read somewhere that in certain circumstances, its opposite is actually beneficial. Some myths say that your first deck should be given to you, but darker ones suggest that you have to steal your first deck (or any deck you use, for that matter) in order for it to be potent.
gregory Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 I've heard it MANY times over the years. It ranks alongside your first deck MUST be a gift and the other - must be stolen - one..
gemitau Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 I watched it last month. It is terrible! But nice to see this language out there, and to recognise it.
