one card = one meaning? or 2 or 3 or 4...

It is happening to me more and more often that a single card, within a reading, a spread, communicates to me more than a single meaning.

for example, (I use Sarasvati cards), the moon, as potential negative meanings, has:

  • illusions;
  • utopia;
  • betrayal;
  • negative emotions;
  • wandering;
  • rudeness;
  • obsessions;
  • self sabotage;
  • laziness;
  • stupidity;
  • instability;
  • psychological issues, psychological problems;
  • problems with ancestors;
  • loss of energy;
  • problems on a magical level;
  • emptying;
  • the end of something;
  • being the victim of a curse;

it would seem that in a reading therefore, the card wanted to indicate avoiding [self-sabotage through obsessions] laziness and [loss of energy, emptying (loss of continence)].

well, for me all these meanings make sense in this specific case and I have considered them.

has this ever happened to you? does this happen often? Is this really how card divination works?

Thank you

Tarots [especially the Triunfi] can have multiple layers.

Sometimes the question is simple and only one meaning is necessary.

Sometimes the situation is complex and 2-3 meanings apply.

Cards also mean different things when paired with other cards, thus you may have the same card give multiple meanings within a larger spread. Or not.

This is normal. It's a feature not a bug 😇

@CaneRandagio are we discussing multiple meanings of tarot cards here or playing cards? If it's tarot, I will move it to the right area for it 🙂

Misterei: ok, clear, thanks for the confirmation, honestly I was slightly doubtful about these multiple meanings, now I know that it's really like this.

DanielJUK: Forgive me, next time I'll be more careful

I've moved it over to the tarot section because I think you will get more discussion on this topic there, no worries 😄

Definitely each tarot card has a range of meanings but a core idea to pick up from the card. They also have to be read with context and nuance, like they can be lighter or darker, they change per reading. The Moon might be different in a love reading, career reading and looking at the month ahead predictive reading. Also it might change depending on the other cards that come up around it. It's not easy to work that all out but I think practising reading gives you confidence and knowledge which makes this easier as you go.

I really agree that the more you practice something, the more you improve your skills, it's a universal law.
if I think about when I did the first reading and think about today...many things have changed, but I think it's like this for everyone.

I believe that the context of the question is an excellent element for filtering the meanings of the cards, but to date, personally, I do not interpret a card depending on the neighboring card, I believe this is a more advanced skill🙏🏻
