I am brand new to this forum and fairly new in regard to reading Tarot and would appreciate any feedback as I am really trying to learn. Someone that I know that reads professionally pulled a card as to if I would hear from a friend that I have not spoken to in over two months...There was an abrupt ending to this friendship and she pulled one card...The Ace of Swords. She said that meant No, but I thought that Ace of Swords meant the beginning of a new pattern of thought or communication so I interpreted that card to mean a Yes in this context. Would anyone be able to share their thoughts on this with me? Thanks in advance.

Every reader has his way of answering questions, and it seems like you and your reader had differing ones. Being the seed card from the suit of communication and speech, I think that the Ace of Swords heralds that there shall be renewed contact between the two of you, and since you asked if he would initiate it, I would take that as a Yes.

HOWEVER, I believe that the cards align themselves to answer the one reading them, not the querent. Your reader might have used her own version of a Yes/No spread for example. I know of a variation that considers all Swords as a No. Or she may have her own reasons for assigning a No to it. In any case, if she seems to be credible and has always had a high degree of accuracy in her readings, then I will trust her answer.

Thank you so much for your response EmpyreanKnight. She has been right on the mark in many instances but has been incorrect in some cases with a direct question being posed. I have read that asking the Tarot yes/no questions is not the best way to gain insight into a situation but it would be better to ask....what can you tell me about....or what do I need to know....Do you agree?

I'm with you on this. I think the Tarot tries to paint a more holistic picture of a situation, and Yes/No questions sort of inhibits that. They can be pretty useful in some situations, but they should be used sparingly. :)

Thanks for your response EmpyreanKnight. In a situation like this where you get cards that indicate more of a yes or no direction....Do you see that answer as the way that events will unfold or do you see that the Tarot can give you insight into the situation and you can use that information to increase the chances of the situation turning out in one way or another. In other words, are the answers that you get more fixed in nature or are they just a snapshot of what is likely to happen if you stay on your current course of action?

There are many cases where people have used the wisdom of the cards to avert a potentially disastrous situation, so I believe it's more of the latter, Jillian. :)

That was the impression that I had as well. Thanks for taking the time to help me tonight EmpyreanKnight. I feel that I have already learned so much....I will be back!

The Ace of Swords for me is related to communication because it's the truth, holding the sword up and it's also a breakthrough!

I think there will be contact but I would warn with this card (and it depends on the other cards on the reading around it) that perhaps you will find out the truth of the situation. You might have clarity and contact but I can't say if you can fix your friendship or that is the end of it from this. It could be a double edged sword and you might not like what you hear.

Wands are really the best communication suit and this is Swords, a seed of Swords which relates to truth, thoughts, action and sometimes conflict. I think you will definitely find out where you stand but I would read this neutrally, it could end in arguments. But the current stand off will definitely change in my view.

I don't know the working out of your reader though and so their interpretation is their reading of it, I would have liked to see some more cards as well as just one card. All the best with your friend :)

Assuming it's the Rider Waite Deck:

I like your stance, but let me add to it. Consider the symbol of the "yod". It is the tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and represents that which is holy.

You may have opportunity for great success in this relationship, even to the point of marriage (as in "holy matrimony").
