I read somewhere that one should not buy a Tarot deck for oneself, but wait to receive one as a gift. Only then will it really bond with you and speak the truth.

What do you think? Is there truth in that or not?

Apparently, one is supposed to put out to the universe that one wishes very much for a Tarot deck and, somehow, it will appear...

I don't believe in this.  I learned to read tarot with a business in mind.  If I waited for someone to gift me I would never be where I am at now.  Although, I do try to gift a tarot deck to loved ones.  And my daughter buys me a deck for the holidays but I'm really picky with decks and have a certain taste in decks as well as style in reading.  Tarot and Oracle decks are very personal and I think they should be purchased for a personal reason by the reader.  Some need certain decks to complete a collection, some need decks to read for themselves and like me, some need decks to use in a profession.

I don't believe in this either. I think I bond pretty well with all of my decks, and the only one deck that was gifted to me is not in the top 3. :)

I've also read you have to steal your first Tarot deck. 'Nuff said. :-X

Buy one for yourself. It's a very satisfying experience to look at different decks and find ones that resonate with you. You can't get that from someone else like you can for yourself! ;) You don't have to have someone buy one for you.

In a profession, Saturn? That sounds interesting. Do you read professionally? Or just for your writing?

Thank you, DancingMoon. :) Now, that's a stretch. LOL

You're right, Emilija. I'm very picky and only like certain decks. Still looking for the soul mate deck.

I think it's nice to get a deck as a gift (I only have 1 I think, and I like it a lot so far), but if I had to wait around for someone in my life to give me one before I started out I would have had to wait around for a long time. Maybe I wouldn't even get into tarot if I was waiting for a gift! :o I think the superstition might have had some practical reason in the past, maybe tarot reading was more of a secret thing back in the day and you'd be taught by your weird old aunt or grandma and get a deck when they felt you were ready.. something like that. I found my first deck in a thrift store 6-7 years ago (Roots of Asia) and was really drawn in by the images. I'd heard about tarot and my flatmate had an oracle deck with unicorns that I liked, which was there too, maybe? But ultimately I picked the tarot deck and I've been striving to learn how to read ever since, and I think I'm at best a low-level intermediate by now ;D

I do not believe in this.  It is nice to have a deck gifted, and most likely you will have an emotional connection to the deck if it is given by someone that means something to you, but I see no reason to no gift oneself a deck either.  I have purchased the vast majority of my decks (including my first one) and I have connected with tarot just fine.  In addition, the decks I am most connected to and read the best with are decks I purchased for myself.

It is a very personal connection and one really needs to have the one or the ones that really speak to us individually.

I'm in the early stages of reading professionally.  My business site is not complete yet but it will be!  I bought a variety of decks because I will have a portfolio that my clients can choose the deck they want me to read with, otherwise, I'll have a stable of decks that I'll use for those who just aren't sure what deck they'd like me to use.

If I had waited for somebody to buy me a deck, I'd not be where I am today. This forum wouldn't exist either. ;)  Nobody in my family really believes in tarot enough to have gifted me one, and I only joined the community after I had bought my first one.

And in many cases, if you don't have a wishlist already, somebody could buy you a deck that doesn't resonate with you at all.  Then you're stuck.

Many decks don't resonate with me. Apologies to the Tarot de Marseilles aficionados, but I have a great deal of difficulty connecting with those decks. Maybe it's just my ignorance and if I understood that system better, I wouldn't feel this way.

Ancient Egypt, for example, is a great love of mine, so, of course, most of the decks "set" in Ancient Egypt will appeal to me like The Journey into Egypt Tarot. I know this is not the case for many people, though, who connect better with completely different images.

Thank you. I am reassured. :D

In my family - on my mother's side - it was tradition, to be given your very first Tarot deck.

Blessed by one of the active readers.

So I got my very first deck from my aunty, who learned to read from my gran, Elizza.

Today, I teach others to read - not in workshops, but small intimate sessions of maximal 4 students. They all receive their first deck, blessed and smudged with Mugworth, Cedar and Juniper from me in a ceremony.

Then they draw their very first card from the deck - their teacher card.....

Oh that is so lovely Mi-Shell!  How awesome that your family has a tradition in tarot.  You're very lucky.

Depends upon the individual. Personally I think it's complete bs, as in the past I have used a few decks of playing cards as my tarot replacement. Till I have gotten my very first official deck Chris in which I've asked Father Christmas to get me for a Christmas present.

My mom bought me my first deck, though at my prompting in the shop. ^^; Can't remember whether I asked her directly for it or not, but she saw me staring at it under the glass for quite a while haha. Unfortunately I ended up not really connecting with it like I do with my decks now--I actually ended up giving it to a sort-of friend in uni (who I believe believed in needing to be gifted your first deck, though I can't remember if she had already been gifted one and had lost it or what; she didn't have one at the time). She was terribly confused at first, and I can't really remember knowing why I felt pulled to bring it to her in the first place--normally I wouldn't just give things to people unless I liked them really well, and I hadn't really thought through gifting it to her in the first place--but there you go. She got a deck like she had been wishing for.

Sometimes I miss that deck. :/ I didn't connect terribly well with it, and it had been collecting dust for a while, but all it took was a random google search of an different deck to find out which one it was and stir up old memories and nostalgia. I like to think that perhaps my coming across it was supposed to spark my interest and my receiving it myself was to get me over any hangups around being given a first deck (I hadn't heard anything otherwise at the time, so, while sceptical, mostly believed it) and that it was eventually supposed to find its way to her to do the same. But it does feel weird knowing that it's out there somewhere instead of with me. :/

When it comes down to it I wonder why some people who are concerned over this "you must be gifted your first deck" thing don't just gift a deck to themselves. I mean, wrap it up, consider it a treat, even leave it for yourself to open later--buying things for yourself doesn't have to be boring. (^^❀) A lot of people just don't know anyone who can gift one to them, and the whole idea has a sort of gatekeeper-y vibe to it, like you can't read tarot unless you're in the "in" club or something. So idk. I guess my opinion is people should do what they want, and if they have hang-ups over it there's no problem working a way around them.

Mi-Shell, you are indeed very lucky to have such a family tradition!!! Good of you to do this for your students.  :)
