Mr_Tea Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 1976: Purchased a Rider Tarot deck because I was into comics and liked the pictures. 2024: Found unused deck in a mildewed box of random odds and sods while having a post-retirement clear-out. Felt inclined to dig a little deeper into the whole Tarot thing. Bought a Thoth deck and guide. Became totally immersed. And now I've only gone and joined a Tarot forum. Wasn't expecting that. Hello everyone.
DanielJUK Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Welcome to the community @Mr_Tea 😀 Well I am glad after many decades you got into tarot, never too late to get interested in it 🙂 These days there are decks by comic artists. There is a publishing brand in the UK called Liminal 11 which only makes decks from comic artists.
Mr_Tea Posted November 27, 2024 Author Posted November 27, 2024 Thanks, Daniel. A highlight of my comic collection is the Vertigo Tarot (published in the mid-90s and now something of a collectors item) featuring characters from the periphery of the DC universe. It's seriously off-kilter. So, between that and the Rider I already had two decks when the bug bit. To these I added the Tattoo Tarot, which had a pleasing simplicity, and the Thoth deck, drawn by the frisson of its connection to 'The Great Beast'. I started my studies by working through the 4 decks in parallel, but Thoth got its talons into me and demanded my undivided attention – which I have been giving it for the past six and a half weeks and I'm still just scratching the surface. It'll get jealous if I go off checking out other decks, even if I'm just window shopping. Incidentally, when you mentioned decks by comic artists, I immediately pictured cards in the style of superhero comics or Manga, but I wonder if anyone has designed a deck based on characters from classic British comics like The Dandy: Dennis the Menace as The Fool; Korky the Cat as The Magus; Desperate Dan as whatever the heck he wants to be...
GreyBug Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Hi @Mr_Tea What a great area of study to delve into now that you have more time. The Thoth deck is really something else, isn't it? There are clear decks out there, and beautiful ones, and deep ones, but nothing quite combines all three as well as the Thoth...

I dont use it often, but I was just thinking about it recently. It reads well. I like that it's a modern pip deck for those moods when I don't want scenic pips but I do want something more modern than a Tarocchi.

Part of my journey into Tarot has involved making high-res scans of my decks and gathering the images into a digital workbook, adding pop-up annotations and divination notes as I studied each card. Initially, I tried to work through the decks in parallel, but once I realised the error of my ways it was clear where my attention needed to be focused. The images created by Crowley and Harris for the Thoth Tarot, viewed one foot tall in radiant colour on my iPad Pro had worked their exquisite magic on me. It's an extraordinary body of work.

Honestly, if you ever felt inclined to share your notes for one of the cards, I think it is SUPER helpful and interesting to see the note systems of how others research and record their studies and findings. However, I also know that sometimes those notes are private and fully understand that but just throwing this out there just in case. 🙂
