Mysticmoonstone Posted July 9 Posted July 9 The Lovers has been showing up frequently for me recently. I’d like to foster a deeper understanding of The Lovers. Concerning choices, the message I see is that there needs to be a balance between logic and intuition. How do you perceive The Lovers card in general? What messages does it reveal to you?
Ferrea Posted July 9 Posted July 9 May I—in proper Gemini fashion—bounce off your thoughts some of my own? The word that first comes to mind when I see The Lovers is usually ambivalence, as in “the coexistence of opposing attitudes or feelings (such as love and hate) toward a person, object, or idea.” [wiki] And this can go in different directions. It can describe difficulty making a decision; it can describe the attraction we feel toward someone or something that represents both what we desire and what we despise. In that sense, The Lovers can also allude to self-love and the need to integrate those parts of ourselves that we tend to project. The Lovers describe the eternal dance around ourselves and each other—the push and pull, the never-ending thesis–antithesis–synthesis process, the realisation that we are separate and always on the lookout for completion. And there is certainly more to it!
Chariot Posted July 10 Posted July 10 (edited) My first thought when receiving The Lovers in a reading is 'commitment.' Not only making a choice (sometimes a difficult one, and usually an ethical one) but then committing yourself to it. When it comes to a love affair, The Lovers isn't the start of it. It's not about attraction, but about commitment. It depicts a result of the love affair—if you choose to stay together forever, reject all others, and/or get married, etc. I would also expect this card to appear if the querent was in the process of adopting a child, or agreeing to become the full-time carer for an elderly parent, etc. These kinds of issues may often appear with The Lovers card. In other less personal spheres that involve choices, The Lovers card can also pop up. Unless the reading is very lightweight ...shall I order the chocolate ice cream or the strawberry ice cream? ...this card usually indicates a weighty matter that includes the intention of following through on whatever you are agreeing to. I have a couple of card decks that reflect this notion. Both the Anna K Tarot and The Everyday Enchantment Tarot depict an elderly couple on The Lovers card, implying the commitment they made to each other a long time ago. First attraction or compatibility, I reckon, are best embodied in the Two of Cups or similar cards. Edited July 10 by Chariot
DanielJUK Posted July 10 Posted July 10 For me, the Lovers is about alignment. It's about acknowledging your beliefs and values as a person. The choice aspect is based on your values. When we meet someone, do we have a mutual connection? Do they also like picnics in the park, Labubu dolls and French food? Or maybe they are completely different to you and your interests but you share the same values. Often when we are dating, we meet people with similar and different interests but the thing that binds us are our shared values. I could date someone who was completely opposite me but not if they didn't at least respect my interest in tarot and divination. The Angel blesses the union that there is harmony and a deep connection between the people. There is a mutual harmony between the people, they align with you. Apart from love, it is making choices which align with your values. A friend of mine moved cities to get a job with a brand they loved because it aligned with their personal values. They worked their way up in this brand over time but they wanted to get into the company because they aligned with it. There is also a gratification with the card, doing something you love and feel passionate about. In the RWS card, we have the story of Adam and Eve, with the tree with the forbidden fruit behind her. We can see the snake tempting them in the tree. They are a blessed couple (by the Angel above), in the Garden of Eden. They have everything they want to live in this garden and the Angel in the cloud gives earthly desires. Behind her is the Tree of Knowledge and behind him is the burning Tree of life. So will they take the temptation? The Tree of Knowledge offers knowledge and wisdom but by eating the apples they will lose their innocence that they just serve under God. By taking from the Tree of Life, they will get eternal life. In the story (spoiler alert) they eat the apples and lose their innocence and discover shame at their nakedness in the garden. They also can decide what is right and wrong themselves, rather than God deciding this and this leads to them being severely punished by God for their disobedience. Ultimately, this is a moral crossroads which can come up with this card. It represents a duality, what should you do ethically and morally? This goes back to what aligns with you. How should you proceed? Important choices are never easy. I think a final part of this card and features in many historic versions, is the choice between a short-term decision or long term. One advice from this card is not to go for short-term temptations or gratification but for something that will pay off in the long term, even if you have to wait for it. If you are getting it repeatedly, I would look at choices you need to make and what aligns you.
JoyousGirl Posted July 10 Posted July 10 What conflicts are occurring within you, and how are you balancing them (as much as possible) before and in the process of moving forward? What are the considerations you're taking into account? i.e. pros/cons and higher elements of self? What is your best option for balanced growth?
