I usually open it right away.  Check out the cards.  Shuffle and start pulling them in threes.  See what I see in the cards and then read the message from the books that come with.  (I love the different messages the card creators have for the different cards) then see how they relate to each other.  After playing for a bit and studying and getting to know them I start actual readings

It seems to depend on the deck for me, and also my state of mind at the time. Usually I wait at least a few days. Right now I have the Next World tarot still in the package it came in, and have had it like that for months! I really wanted the time to be right for opening one I anticipated so much, and now it's become a thing of waiting for the Numinous tarot so I can open these two queer decks at the same time side by side.

I'm another one who waits for the time to feel 'right' to open a deck. (Same with books that come through the mail.) Though I guess until reading this thread I've never really thought to analyse what is 'right'  or wrong about the time.

I'm sitting looking at an unopened Magic the Gathering booster pack too, also waiting for the right time.

I have a toddler glued to my side most of the time aswell as 2 other (school aged) kids, if I lived on my own or just had more alone time I might just open them straight away.

But having someone looking over your shoulder saying 'what's that?' kind of kills the special feeling!

Sure would!  I totally get that.

For sure it must kill that special feeling. That's why I like to open decks by myself in my little corner and savour them slowly.

I probably have 3-4 decks I haven't even opened yet; probably not smart because one deck I've had for over 6 months and if it's not complete I'm probably out of luck, another unopened one I got yesterday. I'm happy to have the decks, but I have to be in the mood to open them (not sure what that means, but I know when I'm ready)

For me it depends. There are days when the mail comes while I'm home for lunch, I'm alone, and have quiet time to open a new deck right then.

There are other days when I don't get to look at the mail until after work, I'm exhausted, and my partner is complaining about his day . . . and I'd rather wait to open a new deck under those circumstances.

But I don't like to leave new decks unwrapped for long, as I want to check to be sure there's no damage and that all the cards are present.

I do have one odd exception -- I've got a copy of the Ravenswood Eastern tarot that I bought years ago and have never unwrapped. It is still mint-pristine. In truth, I knew I'd never use it; I bought it because I'm something of a completist regarding black and white decks. And it is long OOP, so if a card is missing, I can't do anything about it anyway.

I haven’t replied to this thread yet because my only response would have been “I also open them ASAP”, but I do want to add that I see the method in waiting.

When I first got the Next World Tarot it felt a little “cold” and hard to read, but a few months later I feel called to it again and it’s now singing to me. Some decks click immediately, but quite a few take a bit of sitting on the shelf before they’re ready to work with me, I’ve noticed.

But I can’t help ripping into them and trying ‘em out anyway.  ::)

I usually only purchase a deck if I'm out and one just SCREAMS at me, "Hey! Take me home!". In which case, I have to open them almost as soon as I get them, so I can get a feel for them.

I also like to compare my cards when I do my daily reading, I like to put all the cards from different decks and put them in a line and see if I can pick out any interesting parallels or which has the best symbolism.

I am the type of person who opens them immediately they arrive. But takes me a while studying them and although I connect with them before buying them I need some time to get used to them.
