sawasta Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Do any of you have recommendations for printers that do specifically gold foil and gold paint? I've found a couple printers but I'm scared for the quality :,) I went through a couple of the links in this post and was a tiny bit overwhelmed by the submission processes some had and didn't see much about foil. I might have missed something though honestly If anyone knows anything about the following as in whether or not they are good printing companies I would greatly appreciate any advice! - mrplayingcard.com - printninja.com - admagic (https://www.admagic.com/custom-tarot-cards.html) - Shenzen Wangjing Printing Co - SeSe printing the last two are from China and the first three are US based.

If you know of a deck that has the type of gold foil quality that you want, then you could always look into where it’s printed. I *think* Shenzhen Wangjing did the Sasuraibito tarot. It has gold edges. But the cards are glossy and stick together, and the developed tiny scratches almost instantly. They seem to also have done the Prisma visions tarot, and that has the same issues. The cards stick together and I don’t like how it shuffles. It will matter whether you’re doing matte or glossy cardstock. And whether you want glossy or matte gilding! I’ve been told that certain types of gilding can only be had with glossy cardstock.
gregory Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 May I suggest NOT GOING for gold foil edges. They add nothing, damage terribly easily and cause more complaints than almost any other single issue. If you must go that route, matte, please.

The matte gilding on decks like the Pythia botanica oracle seem to hold up much better than the glossy ones, and there is no issue with cards sticking together.

I have been looking at some other decks with gold on them, I think it's definitely better to use gold paint for the front of the cards and my goal is matte, not glossy. I haven't had much luck finding the printers other creators have used but I did reach out to a few people to ask. The way the cards shuffle is one of my biggest priorities with selecting a printer so that's good to know, thank you so much!

I was thinking of using gold foil for the card backs, not so much gilded edges, but I had been considering that so thank you! I'll keep that in mind. I was planning to do matte cards, but it's probably best to not overdo the gold anyways lol
reall Posted October 4, 2021 Author Posted October 4, 2021 imo gold color effect may be better option as yellow in general will stand out printed esp over black background all you need is use gold texture?:) google Dragon Age Tarot for samples! as far as I know gold foil require separate black only vector overlay for each card design on top of base layer tast can't have any black or it may cause extra issue? there are other rules like foil line thickness can't be less than few pixels & how far from edges foil must be etc so best do it simple first & experiment later when you have more exp with printing process!
reall Posted October 5, 2021 Author Posted October 5, 2021 it may be worth mentioning if mentioned LS Visconti Modrone is anything like my ks edt it feat super glossy finish that i personally did not expect to see on *historical museum reproduction cards but maybe it works better with *modern DV card type?:)

caliway Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Thanks so much for that in-depth list! I have used The Game Crafter a lot 🙂 They let you print just one deck which is awesome. I have tried so many times to figure out DriveThru cards and I can NOT figure out their interface. Maybe I'm a dolt, but I just give up after a while, and just go back to sites I know that work.
gregory Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 From outside the USA, the postage on Gamecrafter decks (never mind customs etc) makes it uneconomic. That's why I stick to Printerstudio, which also lets you do one deck, and uses delivery hubs all over the world.

Hope to add more good printers in future, even I did not update if for a while!:) it's worth mentioning tgc added holo & transparent cardstock option recently & will continue to improve in future!:) dtc interface is bit outdated & they discontinued Bridge size cards & linen cardstock option for all but Tarot size!:// even I took 3month to figure how to set my title first then upload pdf with card front n backs, may as well share template in future!:) last i hear they also got hub in europe so it may help reduce import cost for EU, not sure for uk, also know some shipping providers like hermes & postenl collect import tax in advance that may also help reduce import cost for EU hopefully tgc will catch up with these options in future!:)

Cryptocartography Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 (edited) Thank you so much for this list, this is unbelievably helpful!! I just finished up my tarot deck, but had no idea how to do anything with printing. Probably going to see how smartpress gInsert image from URLoes! Edited February 3, 2022 by Cryptocartography
elizakingsburyart Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Wish I had been a part of this forum before I started printing my deck! I have seen a lot of the ones posted above. Was going to go with Vervante, but I saw some mixed reviews online. I ended up choosing AdMagic - I believe they are a small company. My sample deck came out great, but I'm awaiting the full delivery. They have been great with communication! Will keep you posted.
Cynthylee Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Thanks for sharing! This list is so comprehensive, I have tried to print tarot sets in several of them, with good and bad results... I'd also like to add a Chinese printer: WJPC, whose quality and price may not be the best, but whose service and professionalism impressed me - sales will offer lots of design advice, help you track and give feedback on every aspect of production throughout, and once you're not satisfied with the quality, free re-do until you are! Of course, customs and shipping costs are an issue.
gregory Posted June 26, 2022 Posted June 26, 2022 (edited) I have railed about gilded edges before - I do wish people would stop with doing them. I have a Kunati Touchstone deck. I just got it out to check something in a thread here; I'd not had it out in several months - the Happy Squirrel card was stuck to the bottom of the box... And guess what - when I very carefully managed to extract it - it was the ******ing gilded edge that had stuck.... WHY do publishers KEEP doing these ? How many people actually want them ? Creators - listen up here - don't DO that ! Edited 5 hours ago by gregory Edited June 26, 2022 by gregory
Niobium Posted June 26, 2022 Posted June 26, 2022 (edited) At a minimum, offer an ungilded option on a quality stock. x.x I buy those more and more these days. Edited June 26, 2022 by Niobium

As soon as they received the deck they complained that there was a card missing. My first thought was 'impossible!' because I always check new decks. But I of course let them return it anyway. When I received it, low and behold - two cards were stuck together, so it was a complete deck like I thought. I really dislike sticky decks. *sigh* I have been told that not all gilded decks have issues. Matte gilding typically do not. But the percentage of problematic gilded decks are so high that I personally wouldn't risk it. People can always edge their decks in gold later if they really prefer gold. I have done it and its not difficult (I used one of those archival ink pads). And I actually think it held up better than the ones from the printer 😄
