What do you normally look for in an Oracles deck?

What do you guys normally look for in a deck? I find many Oracle decks overtly spiritual/fairytale-y and I'm thinking of creating my own deck, bringing it down to earth a bit; no unicorns and guardian angels but everyday items that feel familiar. However, does that take away some of the deck's power and intrigue, it's not 'lifting the soul' in the same way? I'd be interested in any opinions.

I think that a grounded, direct, and practical oracle deck that concerns itself with more mundane and worldly matters would be nice. Sibilla and Kipper decks come to mind, tho I know that they're a different category from oracles. Even if you showcase everyday stuff in your cards, if you're creative you can still make them pretty interesting, tho a touch of the unusual is always welcome.

Thanks Empyrean!

I'm thinking a practical deck to seek advice on what to do - quite literally, what next step to take (such as 'check the foundations of your plan' or 'rise above and see the big picture'). I have plenty of text drafts ready for the content but I'm mainly wrestling with the illustration side of it as I don't quite know whether to go with plain and simple or something layered and decorated. Oh well, I guess I just have to go with what pleases my eye as I'll never know what speaks to everybody else. Nevertheless, I'd like to hear about everyone's preferences and tips :)

Interesting yet practical keywords.

That’s an interesting idea for a deck, Saskia. You are right that many oracles focus on the spiritual/self-development aspects when sometimes what you want is the practical, nitty-gritty stuff.

I use Lenormand/Kipper if I want a down-to-earth reading but this involves learning a method. Something which can be used straight away with clear actions would be a useful tool.

I'm not sure it matters what the theme is of the deck, there will always be people who love angels and unicorns and others who don't. But what I think is key is the structure of that theme, what is the oracle's purpose? like spiritual discovery? messages from the unicorns? To make it as general as possible will make it sell better and can be used for any kind of reading and also you need to have a card for every possible outcome in that theme. I always in awe of artists and creators to make all those choices!

I love the idea of your mundane everyday items oracle. There are photograph oracles and tarot decks, literally just photos of things but I prefer a bit more to a deck than that. I like keywords but some people don't! I like on Linnie's A'ha Oracle she has a number at the bottom of each card. You can look it up in the book for more info. That gives you a choice to read it entirely intuitively or look for more info.

I think the 3 things I look for....

- art I like

- a theme I like

- the cards individually, their messages or topics or keywords

More than 36 or 40 cards. With small decks like that the same cards keep coming up, it is hard to get informed readings. This is where Kipper and Lenormands come into their strength, where it is a loss to an oracle.

I hope Bodhiseed will speak up about how her oracles evolved. Beautiful and organized. https://bythesycamoretree.blogspot.com/

They are built around her core beliefs and are very powerful.

Exactly!  Well put, Daniel.

I'm a keyword and art person.  The keywords mean everything to me, the more concise the better.  I don't need sentimental, I look for a precise word or small phrase to connect to a picture that I can quickly relate to at first glance.

Yes!  They need to have a substantial amount of cards for me to even consider buying an oracle deck.  Gone are the days I pay 25 bucks for a 33 card deck!  Thank you for the link to Bodhiseed's blog!  That's what I admire about so many readers here is their peaceful, flowing intuitive readings!  I have not achieved that yet but I have some great people here to learn from!  ^-^

This is what I look for as well.  A well explored and executed theme is my kryptonite  :D.  I also like my oracles to have a "useful" companion book, not just card interpretations.

I agree with AJ-ish on making sure the deck has enough cards.  It's the first thing I look to see when a deck catches my eye.  More is better.

Also, unlike on tarot cards, I really like keywords on oracle cards since every oracle system is unique.  It makes learning that particular system so much easier.

Good luck on the deck!

Thank you all for your comments! I was thinking a deck of 40 but given the comments, 50 could be better. I'm planning to have 5 suits or rather, streams, of 10. The more I think of this, the more i like the everyday items myself. I'd like to 'promote' people notice synchronicity in life
