2 of Swords - Lilies and Roses Significance

Hi there,

Im working with my favourite deck to attempt to reconnect back with my cards. Its been a while and im looking deeper into significant symbols that occur on my cards to gain their meanings to the card in hand. I've chosen to focus on the Swords suit recently, and im working with the Silver Witch Tarot.

Its usual depiction of a woman, blindfolded, with two balanced swords are there, however it appears to have roses on her right (cards left) and lilies on her left (cards right). Both are slightly frozen.

Could this signify the sitters vunerability with this card in play?

Thoughts welcomed :D

Usually means head and heart. In my RWS deck they are absent (you find them in 2W, united), but the choice between what your heart and head are telling you is a popular interpretation of 2S anyway. Colours, either white or red are significant. Both flowers could be of either colour and shade the interpretation.

Edited to add: just checked on the colours and positions. When together the flowers signify unity of purpose; here split, they echo disunity. Her left side signifies the conscious mind, right side the subconscious. The white lilies can signify purity of intention, and may indicate the original idea of the Ace of swords. The red roses will be a subconscious pull of the emotions in the opposite direction, leading to stalemate.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ratty,

Thanks for this and certainly does make sense. I find this quite a powerful card in general, ive just never really gone into the symbolism within this deck. Its my favourite deck and lost my way, so i really want to connect back on a deeper level with it :)

It mentions the vulnerability aspect you picked up on (and which I didn't - because anyone carrying two big sharp metal objects designed to kill...)

Good luck reconnecting.  :)

oh! What an interesting article! Thanks for this :D Agreed with the dagger point ;)
