I started with tarot last month, and just borrowed a deck. Today I got my own! Rider waite. What shall I do with it? Shuffle? Put it in the sun? Use it? What?  ;D ;D ;D

Lol getting a new deck is always exciting, and especially so when it’s your first!

Whenever I get a deck I like to go through the cards one by one so I can look at all the pretty pictures. If it’s a preloaded deck that comes to me shuffled I’ll put all of the cards back in their proper order. After that I usually have a bit of a play around by putting them into different groups. This helps me to familiarise myself a little with some of the imagery on the cards. Some ways I’ve sorted the cards before are:

By predominant colour

Male/female/neither/both

Element

By how many people are on the card

Cards I like/don’t like/are indifferent about

Depending on the cards (particularly if they are an oracle deck) I’ll do some others too.

After this (or sometimes before) I’ll do a little 3 cards interview spread. Usually this one

1...3...2

1. Who are you - tells you a little about what this deck will be like

2. Who am I - this is you at the moment or how the deck sees you

3. How will we best work together

I just like to spend some time with the deck before I start doing proper readings with it. Occasionally I feel the need to cleanse the deck before I use it, usually by putting my shard of blue kyanite on top for a while, I generally find the don’t need anything more than that.

Hope that helps!

Tank you for input!

I feel like staring using it, but I have no one to read for today. So it'll just sit there for a while  8) maybe get a good shuffle :)

First check if all the cards are there and that none of them has misprints, tears, etc.

If it's all clear then now you'd have to begin studying it in great depth! There are so many great books on the RWS that you'll definitely be spoilt for choice. You're still just starting on your Tarot journey and I'm so excited for you. :))

Congrats!

I usually cleanse my decks before using them and have a little ritual I do with them, but that's me.

What I will absolutely suggest, though, is that you count your cards and make sure they are all there. I've had two experiences recently where a new deck was missing a card. In the last instance, there were 78 cards, but I didn't realize for a day or two that there were duplicate Moon trumps, but no Chariot.

I hope you enjoy your deck.

Congratulations:)

I start by counting the cards to make sure they're all there.

Then I seperate the Trumps/Wands/Cups/Swords/Pentacles into separate piles and randomly put them all back together.

Then shuffle and shuffle and shuffle and cut and shuffle!

Then use and abuse ;)

LOL. I think I need to Waite a bit longer. You don't learn to drive in a Ferrari. And as far as secret hankerings go, I'm flirting with Levi for my launchpad. I just can't find the right deck. I read bad things about Universal Wirth.

It's been counted, shuffled and used for a reading!

It feels so odd with this new deck! It's the exact same images at the deck I borrowed all last month, but still feels so unfamiliar! Weird!

We have a member here who prefers buying decks from fellow tarotists over getting them brand new.

She gets on with them better. I think she responds to the energy already added to them.

You could very well be like her :)

I personally like them virgins lol...Im okay with the ones that have been looked at but if you've worked long and hard with it...Nah!

I'm possessive like that ;)

What do you mean by Levi?

The UW has the suits elements a different way hasnt it?

Urgh! Sounds like hard work to me!

Same here. All of my decks were brand new and sealed when I first had them. I don't think I'd be averse to getting a used deck tho, I guess I just never had the opportunity before.

Congratulations on getting your first deck!

I enjoy getting all majors out first and lining them up in three groups and then looking at the court ‘families’. Picking out favourite images and ones I really dislike...

It will soon start to feel familiar to you. [emoji3]

Thank you! The images are familiar, just the deck feels odd. I guess it'll feel right after a few good shuffles :) It's supposed to get a bit worn, isn't it?

Hooray for the new deck! I like to have a look through the entire thing to see that all the cards are there and admire the art. The only cleansing-esque thing I do is shuffle it well and mix all the cards afterwards  :))

Congratulations hierophant[/member] .. Incidentally this was also the first deck that I purchased. My journey too therefore started with this deck. However at that time I knew no rituals or anything, so I just started with it by unwrapping the cover and getting on!

Now I have my own ritual for every deck that I buy..

All the very best for your journey!

The Mythic Tarot (Newell) was my first ever deck, but the Original Rider Waite was my second. This is a very solid choice for a beginner deck.
