hi! new to the forum, but not to tarot.

many people use base and quint cards. i most often don't, but in doing exchanges, i have at times found the quint useful for laying out the overall theme of the other cards, or simply clarifying the other cards if i'm stumped. then, the reading makes perfect sense.

what is the real difference between them? they seem so similar. i think i prefer the quint.

curious to know thoughts from others. useful or not?

I’ve been known to use both. I don’t use them all the time though, usually when I feel something extra is needed or if I feel something is missing

HOLMES there is an interesting thread about this on AT https://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=53790.  Basically the base card is the card at the bottom of the deck after you lay out the spread, and quint card is calculated by adding the numerical value of all of the cards in the spreads (courts are not included) and reducing that number 1-22 and will correspond to the Major Arcana of that number (the Fool is 22).

I personally do not use them.

I use base cards occasionally, but I haven't used quints before.

Just learning about quint cards and curious why the court cards should not be counted?

I have used court cards when calculating a quint and I've never heard that you're not supposed to count them! I just give them the numbers from 11 to 14.

I've heard three ways of calculating quints: add all minor, courts, and major, just minor and major, and just minor. I personally switched from just minor to all because for me courts don't represent people but situations or feelings in my spreads.
