Libra 58 Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 How long time do you need to spend with a deck before you know it's not working for you? :-\
TheFeeLion Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I think this might be one of those questions like “how long is a piece of string?” I haven’t been using tarot for too long but I know from what others have posted in the past that sometimes they will get a deck that they don’t end up connecting with so will put it aside, then much later (sometimes years) will come back to it and they connect with it straight away and it works like a dream. Maybe you’re not quite ready yet to use the particular deck in question? Maybe there are other decks you need to work with first before you can properly connect with this deck? It could also be that your deck is actually meant to be for someone else but needed to come through you first. If it’s a deck that you would really like to work with then maybe put it to the side and play with another one for a while. Maybe it will get jealous and decide it finally wants to come to the party and give up all it’s juicy secrets! Or maybe not. There’s no right or wrong answer here, just do what feels right for you. If you want to persevere then go for it, if you don’t... well then, don’t :)
Flaxen Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 This is a tricky question to answer.... There are some decks we click with straight away - perhaps something in the artwork or the vision of its creator resonates strongly - and it reads like a dream. Other decks we may buy because other people recommend them or praise them highly but they don’t seem to flow in the same way. At this point, you have a choice - give the deck away/sell it or keep it in your collection for a later date. Something to bear in mind is that we are always changing. The person we were ten years ago is different to the one we are now. Our priorities, situations, interests all shift. A great deck is one which can accompany us on all those shifts. Some decks however will be perfect for us at a certain point in our life but no longer seem as relevant as we change.
Guest snobchickenleg Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 How long time do you need to spend with a deck before you know it's not working for you? :-\ The moment you get think of getting the deck should definitely tell you if you're gonna click or if it will work for you. Everytime I look for a new one, I use my intuition by looking at it, feeling the package and such. You will definitely feel an instant connection with the cards. Reading it won't be that hard or as you say to know how long it will take you to know if the deck is working for you.
gregory Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Sometimes they won't work. So you put them away for a while and all of a sudden that one is the ONLY deck that WILL work. It's happened to me so often. Decks are weird !
Esk Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 I also have some decks I couldn't connect at first and I put them aside. Now it works far better. I also have one, the Dream Enchantress Tarot I can't connect with at all. Maybe it will never work between us, maybe it's just not the right time and I'll be able to use it later. Anyways, I like the illustrations so I keep it :))
isawhale Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 How long time do you need to spend with a deck before you know it's not working for you? :-\ for me it's either instant connection or it's not...of course with practice and patience you can develop a connection over time to any deck (imo)..but the decks that I have a really solid connection to it was instant
Thoughtful Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 l will give a new deck a week. l will use it for personal readings initially, if l get cards that make no sense or it seems half-hearted then it goes. l have been attracted to many decks in the past, but if it does not work with me within a week it never will. Thats just my experience. Some say you can read any deck, that can be true, but if it does not connect with your energies or pique any knowing or intuition you won't get the best readings.
EmpyreanKnight Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Sometimes they won't work. So you put them away for a while and all of a sudden that one is the ONLY deck that WILL work. It's happened to me so often. Decks are weird ! Same here! I'd work with a deck for a month or so, and if I don't gel with it I let it rest. Once I feel the ole stirring I try to work with it again and sometimes it feels like communing with an old friend. Don't give up on a deck just because it refuses to share its secrets with you at first.

The number of people here who have let a deck go and then realised they would like it back as it spoke to them.... Never mind the time I slagged off a deck big time, and then read with it on a bet - and it was VICIOUSLY spot on...
DevonCarter Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 I have had some decks that I thought I would love, but then I get them and just pick them up, look at them, and am like "Nope". There are two right now that I haven't even shuffled, because every time I open the box I just put them straight back. One of them I think I will keep, and the other I may not. I'm keeping the one, because I have recently had two decks that just didn't seem to click for me at all, suddenly be new favorites. It might be me learning to read better, and thus being better able to interpret different decks. It might be that my depression meds have been adjusted. It might be any number of things... but right now I'm keeping the iffy decks that appeal to me art-wise, and I figure either I'll learn to read them or I'll just enjoy the art until I'm sure I need to let them go.
Libra 58 Posted August 30, 2018 Author Posted August 30, 2018 Thank you for interesting answers! Since I hardly have any intuitions when I read the cards I rely on the pictures to tell me the story. So even though I like the pictures and colours, if I can't clearly see the full picture it becomes hard for me to connect to the deck. Like now I have been working with "The Harmonious Tarot" since the beginning of this year and still I don't know how I feel about this deck. :-\ I have to use a magnifying glass to be able to see the pictures properly. But I'm stubborn and think that I don't want to use a new deck, when I have been using it for almost the whole year now. ;D But I will chose a new deck to work with by New Year, as I always do! :P
Thoughtful Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Have you looked at the Everyday Enchantment. It is very colourful and modern, and as you say you like to work from the pictures so this could be ideal for you. There are lots of little clues within the pictures that even with a minimum of intuition you will see something that sparks you. This deck would encourage your intuition further l am sure. They are large cards, l had to trim mine but it took nothing away from the images. Maybe I buy it or maybe I don't. :-\ I have over 100 decks already, so I have a pile of decks that I can chose from when New Year is coming. :)) I have almost already decided what deck I will use next year! :-X
Arch Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 My current deck and I, namely "The Modern Spellcasters" tarot, I clicked with before I got it. I scrolled through litterally hundreds of decks and spent hours of my life on it. And when I saw that one, I just knew it was right for me. Sure enough after I got it earlier this month I have never looked back. The Rider Waite is still useful, it is the deck I now just have in my backpack in case someone wants to be read, while I reserve that one for myself and my own readings at home.
