Hi all. I’ve just learned about this and how to calculate it in a different Tarot group, and I’m wondering how many of you consider that in every reading you do? Should it *always* be considered? Or when should it not be read? Opinions? Thanks!

No responses, so does this mean that no one here considers the quint card usually? Not sure how to know if I should consider it or not in readings, now that I understand how it works.

That's up to you and your deck, isn't it? You can give it a try and see what happens.

Ok, thanks. I’ll see if it “feels right” then. Sometimes people are adamant about a practice one way or another. Sounds like with this one not so much.

I don't do use quints, but I know some readers like it. As Ratty said, for most things, if I wonder about them, I try them out in my readings. But if you'd like to see some discussion about quints, you could check out this thread on the old forum (if that's not the tarot group where you already were).  :)

Thank you! I was on that forum but had not seen this thread. I’ll check it out.

I have used Quints quite often. More so for my readings with the TdM decks. They have usually given me a direction/clarity for a particular reading.

But I have never been religious about using it for all my readings. I use them only when the first throw of cards is not helpful and I need some additional pointers (read clarity) to finish off.

I almost always read the quint card, unless it just doesn’t feel right. You’ll know intuitively if that’s the case :)

There was another post made just around the same time you made this one, Tiggy, so I think I mixed them up or thought the same person had made both! I sometimes read the quint if I feel like it or think it would add another interesting layer to the reading. Most of the time it's extra work for me since I like small spreads the most, but from time to time it can be fun  ^-^

Thank you! I also like smaller readings. I still don’t feel quite learned enough in every single card to try and consider too many at once in a reading.

I've only recently heard of the quint card, and honestly it sounds like way too much math for me.

I do sometimes look at the card at the bottom of the deck to see how it relates, however.

I don't! Like Devon it has way much adding and subtracting for me  :)) Maths is my weakest area! I do look for number patterns and numerology meanings in the reading but it just seems to make my readings more complicated, I already get enough in the message without adding a card based on the numbers all added / divided down.

But I have seen people use it on here to really good effect! It can give more insight when you are not sure where the reading is going or the final message.

TdM is often used to indicate the Tarot de Marseille decks

Yup I think they call it the Shadow card or the base card. Not sure about the term for it. But yes, this card too gives an underlying theme of the reading. Something to be kept in mind types!!

Ah, thank you! I’ve never used that but it’s a beautiful deck.

To your original question, I rarely use the Quint card.  I am more likely to use it if I feel like I need more clarity.

Sometimes people are adamant about a practice one way or another.

I am weary of anyone adamant about one true way to read tarot.  No one really knows the true origins of Tarot, and as such no one knows the intent or meanings used in the creation of the cards.  So the way I see it is that different systems within Tarot have adopted and adapted it, but that does not mean it is the "right way".  There are fabulous resources, and I enjoy reading and learning about them.  They are very helpful when starting out, but do not let them limit you.
